I've been alive quite a long time, and have been quite a few places... how is it I've never experienced this phenomenon? Or even really heard of it until now?

I remember seeing some image like this years ago. Probably 6 or 7 years ago. It could be the second example.

I have not seen it with mine own eyeballs.

While I have heard of Radio Frequencies behaving like this, every long distance radio operator knows of this phenomenon in radio frequencies, I've not heard of it happening with light. Light is a frequency so its possible.

In HF radio (High Frequency - long distance - intercontinental) the radio signal can be "bounced" off of the underside of the upper atmosphere. The Ionosphere. This is called Skip in radio circles.
