Atascocita High School band members are in trouble over a gift they gave their rival school before the varsity football game on Friday. The gift is supposed to encourage good sportsmanship. Humble ISD, instead, said it was racist.

Seven band members presented their gift to their counterparts in the Summer Creek High School band on the field before the game. Along with candy and a decorated bucket for Halloween was a small watermelon, coconut, pineapple and watermelon gum.

Eyewitness News spoke to two of the band members and their parents. The students said they never dreamed it would be considered racist.
"We didn't do anything wrong," said Carolina Andaverde, who plays the flute. "We wouldn't do that because we know better than that. Our parents raised us better."


"I'm mixed (race). I don't take offense to that. How can someone else take offense?" asked senior Alyssa Taylor.
They've been told they'll be punished which might include suspension and no more band.
"It's just not fair, not fair. They're good kids with good heads on their shoulders," said Hector Andaverde, Carolina's father.

Humble ISD statement:

"It is a tradition for student representatives of competing schools to exchange gifts on the field at varsity football games. On Friday, students from one school presented students from the other school with a watermelon, a pineapple, a coconut, and watermelon gum. Today, school administrators conducted an investigation and after considering the totality of the circumstances, determined that the gift was inappropriate and lacked good sportsmanship. Atascocita High School will not tolerate racial insensitivity."

The district wouldn't disclose punishment citing privacy laws.

"We weren't being racist towards them (Summer Creek). If they took it that way, we're sorry. We didn't mean any harm," Andaverde said.

A violent Atlantic City goon whose heinous attack on a homeless woman was captured on video received some jailhouse justice of his own on Monday.

An unidentified officer at the Atlantic County Justice Facility knocked Ibn Hunter, 25, to the ground during a strip search after the suspect lunged at him, authorities said. The scuffle left Hunter, who only days earlier was accused of knocking a homeless woman unconscious at nearby Brown's Park as a witness taped the attack,the Press of Atlantic City reported.


Ibn Hunter appears to wind up for a punch in the video, which was uploaded Friday and subsequently taken down. The blow reportedly knocked the homeless woman unconscious.
Hunter's arrest on an aggravated assault charge stems from a now-deleted video, uploaded Friday, of his brazen attack at the park.

The footage shows Hunter bickering with the unidentified 45-year-old woman before winding up for a swing. He takes one look at the camera and then sucker punches the victim.

Hunter faces charges of aggravated assault and assaulting a law enforcement officer.

Hunter faces charges of aggravated assault and assaulting a law enforcement officer.

“This is what happens when you say I ain’t gonna smack you,” Hunter gloats to the cameraman, who pans to linger on the knocked-out woman’s face.

The attack left the unidentified woman hospitalized until Monday, the Press reported.

It took the weekend to track down Hunter. His booking photo shows a gash to the head and a black-and-white striped jumpsuit he earned after the alleged jailhouse fracas.

He will face another charge of assaulting a law enforcement officer.

Authorities are seeking the man who recorded the footage for questioning. He uploaded the video to Facebook under the name "Bdsb BroadDay," but that page has been deleted as well.

Authorities say a man faces charges in Louisiana accusing him of killing his father and stabbing his mother because they ordered fast food and didn't get any for him.

Ronald Pritchett, 32, of Purvis, Mississippi, faces charges of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and auto theft in the New Orleans suburb of Jefferson Parish, said Col. John Fortunato, spokesman for the sheriff there.

Fortunato Percival Pritchett, 58, and his wife, Renitta Pritchett, 57, were stabbed Wednesday at their home in unincorporated Gretna. Renitta Pritchett was treated and released, University Medical Center spokeswoman Aleis Tusa said.

Fortunato said in a news release that Pritchett became enraged about food. Asked by email for more details, he replied, "They ordered food from a fast food restaurant and didn't include him."
