View Full Version : What is your internet speed ?

Was 15 mbps then for the same price went to 50 mbps wiht a hefty monthly download limit as I stated in a earlier thread.
Now it seems that there is a very good chance that the speed will increase again, soon 1 gbps will be offered near here and my provider is saying others in the area will get a speed boost with no rate increase.
Hell I was happy with 15 mbps.
Seeing my first modem was 300 baud.
I realize some here are on sat, or still on dial up.
And I suspect some still use smoke signals to connect ! ;)
Or use semaphore to connect
;D

My connection is hit and miss mattering if it windy or not. If it's windy the trees move and it blocks my neighbors satellite dish. My other connection ended abruptly when my other neighbor moved out and stopped his wifi. Things are tough all over man.

I if I remember right you "borrow" your net ability from your neighbors.
I used to "war drive" to find hot spots to connect to myself, but sadly most now are wising up and kicking in security which with the right chip set dongle and software "backtrack" the keys can be found. I played with doing it for a while ,at least until I learned how to do it , then quit.
I do offer in my neighborhood open no password guest channels both on the 2.4 gig and 5 gig to provide a neighborhood hot spot, which I am cool about as long as no one gets greedy, and if they do I lock them out.
Using a Net gear WNDR4300 which from where it is placed can provide a good 200 yard if not better radius signal, depending on the weather conditions.
That is something I check everyday to make sure of.

You sound like Doc and I'm only Marty... I don't borrow anything, if I can get it and it's on my property it's mine, that's all there is to it. I have to look into this 'war drive' and those jiggihertz moves, could be another angle to consider.

The way I look at it I have a 250 gig per month limit, which I do not use, so as long as the bandwidth usage is below that I am cool to share with others that maybe can not afford to have the net or are just passing through the ares.
I feel the same way as you when it comes to radio signals, up to a point !
I feel it is ok as long as borrowed usage is below whosoever signals that I used to use when out of my area and my own network.
But also I strongly feel that if the "guests" usage starts to exceed my monthly bandwidth, and cost me money, I will give them a haircut at throat level and make sure they never connect again to my system !

Is slow a speed? Yesterday, it was slow...today, pretty slow too. If I could venture a guess, tomorrow might be a bit slow as well.

Absolutely Doc! My real internet is pricey and is not locked up so anyone passing through can leach on. The only real bandwidth I use is to get movies to entertain my little thing here. Lots of left over jiggybits to share. Currently I don't think there is a limit but if I tried to test that it's sure to be an extra thing I don't need to pay for. Not sure what site is accurate for speed testing here but I get much more than 3600baud.

Near a phone? tried to call you just a bit ago...
My speed costs me abt $50 per month and that for what it is I conceder cheap.
50mbps at 250 gig per month , which I suspect will go up very soon in both speed and bandwidth at the same price.

Don't matter much here, my bill comes under the name of john dough so if SHTF he moved. Ok understand you are a net leach. Tho maybe I can understand seeing the hard times you have gone through as you have posted here. I have no problem with that.
It is amazing here for me , because most here have their own connections and only now and then a few who knows who they are connect to me every month. So far less than 10 gigs per month.
But we are getting off my op question of what others net speed is !
I am just amazed at what I have now and probably will be more amazed with the upgrade coming soon, I do feel for they that high speed is only a dream where they are at. fact !
At least what is your "borrowed" speed?
Run a test
Bandwidth as I see it if you do not use it you lose it, so that is why I keep my public hot spot on both bands going as long as usage is below my monthly limit.
To others how fast are you ?

100Mb down, 5 Mb up here. abt the same for upload here, tho think have hit 7 up ?
For some reason up and down is not a fixed thing , have hit close to 70 down, a few times, which I can not enplane. But so far never below 50mbps.
I love the wow factor, which most will not.
I started as a tube radio type and lived long enough as a few here into the microprocessor and fiber optic era.
Even tho I understand the tech and can repair most of all of it , it still now and then compared to how and what I was brought up in as a kid.
Is magic !
Just wish my Grandfather was alive to day to see that I was right, back in the late 70's, seeing the roaring arguments we had when I built my first computer. ( bare board, with bags of capacitors / resistors and chips with the brain microprocessor. Along with the rf coupler so the tv can act as the monitor.
He could not see any use for them !
And I wish I knew then what I know now ! ;D

Find a Internet speed test site..
And do the test..
I know cable has limits and sometime I will look to see what is is, fiber is in the terabyte range and above.

Download=15.04mbps
Upload=1.50mbps
I don't have access to cable, broadband or fiber. Only DSL.
Used to have Satellite til about 2012, but a neighbor was stealing my bandwidth
leaving me with an email notification that my bandwidth limit had been exceeded
within a week of use and was being cut back to dial-up speed for the remainder of the month.
I was spending over a $100 a month to watch a couple 5 minute Youtube video's.
I was really happy when DSL became available.

My speed is: 2.5 download - 0.5 upload
I live way out in the sticks (Northeast Texas far away where cotton *used* to be something really big around here - not no more for over half a century now - all we got is a bunch of old goats sittin' around talking about the old days - funerals every so often) - I am connected to AT&T DSL, and, I pay $50/mo for it - I **HATE** their service, but, I hear the only other service is Satellite via dishnet (HUGHESNET), which, I fear would be just another ripoff. I'm also stuck way back with win98 and win2000.
I need help.
