Could be a wild weekend for Texas?

HEAVY RAIN LIKELY ACROSS TEXAS THIS WEEKEND
Hurricane Patricia is set to bring lots of rain to Texas this weekend through the early part of next week. abc13 meteorologist Elita Loresca has more.

Updated 49 mins ago
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Tropical moisture will bring heavy rain to the Lone Star State over the next five days. The rain will start off widely scattered around the Houston area on Friday. Widespread heavy rain is likely by Saturday evening and into early Sunday. More heavy downpours are possible Sunday into Monday. If you have outdoor activities planned this weekend, you might want to consider other options.

Altogether most places will pick up 3 to 5 inches of rain over the next five days. Flash flooding will be possible in the Houston area as well as central and north Texas. Some locations could have more than 7 inches of rain before the storm moves out.

Much of the moisture will be blowing into Texas from a tropical cyclone in the eastern Pacific. Hurricane Patricia is currently a powerful category 5 hurricane. The storm will wind down quickly after it makes landfall late Friday near Puerto Vallarta. But upper level winds will carry the moisture across Mexico and into Texas.

Pacific hurricanes are notorious for producing record rains and deadly flash floods over Texas in October:

In October 1994, Hurricane Rosa's moisture flooded Houston and the San Jacinto River with 28" of rain.

In October 1998, Hurricane Madeline's moisture flooded San Antonio and the Guadalupe River with 22" of rain.

Already have had some small frog strangler rain cells pass over here today!

Looks like it will become worse in the coming days! Which we need the rain here, burn bans here for near 100 miles radius of me.

I just wish that Zaps area could get some of the fun, tho spread out over weeks instead of days!

Edit: That hurricane does look to be a pure ass kicker !

Anything seems possible and dammit they need it..!

Early this year the almost same setup drenched Texas with in some places near if not over 30 inches of rain in about one week.

Not fun !

Brew, better prep up and get ready to batten down the hatches. The maritime community strongly feels we are going to get hammered this winter with storms. Probably late Dec and January. Should be a wild time working on the water! Imagine working in an office during a 9.0 earthquake.

Imagine working in an office during a 9.0 earthquake. 3 foot seas and more , (fun really starts with 4 foot sea's and up) crap, a person needs Velcro just to stay in place. Forget trying to move unless on the dips and peaks of the waves. I hated riding crew boats out to the rigs in the gulf, when the sea's were rough,

3 and sometimes 4 dimensional shake and bake !

A 15 foot snowpack in the Sierra Nevada range would be an encouraging start...

3 and sometimes 4 dimensional shake and bake !

the six degrees of motion are

x,y,z
roll, pitch, yaw

Then there is hogging and sagging (tends to be hard on metal or wooden ships)

When all else fails you surely wouldn't want your center of gravity to be positioned over your center of buoyancy. Ships invert in this condition.

Hmm...your knowledge about ships amazes me. Your average person does not know this unless they've worked in the maritime industry.

Amazing what little knowledge sticks to you after a year in a Coast Guard MMT office. The boss left soon after I did to become COTP SAN DIEGO.

Cool Palani. Out of all the .gov agencies, I actually like the Coast Guard. All my professional credentials are issued by them. Bunch of kids out there helping mariners in distress. They, for the most part, aren't looking to bust people. They actually rescue folks. Anyway, as of now, they've always been knowledgeable and helpful. They know a lot about the CFR's. I can't find a damn thing in the CFR's, they are frustrating.

Every federal agency has an idea of what and who they want to regulate. The CFRs are their notice of their procedures and policies. If you have a question the best action you can take is to ask. Forgiveness is not usually part of policy.

So far just a tad over 5 inches rain here in 12 hours!

Have reports of 8 inches south of here, the real fun should start tomorrow!

I usually just call the Coast Guard, asknmc, and see what they say. The Coasties who answer are always polite, friendly, and helpful. It would be nice though if things were a bit easier for your average guy with the CFRs.

my cat is pissed. damn hurricane is f-ing up his night social life

uscg -- lots (most?) coasties have nothing to do with rescuing people. they are tasked with harassing the docks and ships that call on them. i'm in the biz..

we would be better served if they were collecting tariffs on EVERY good imported. don't even allow the ship to tender until the fee is paid. utterly ridiculous that we don't charge foreign goods a fee for access to the markets/infra/regs that we built and maintain

Are you sure you aren't confusing Coast Guard with Customs (ICE)?
