I bought a gold coin, a pre-33 liberty head $10 eagle, 1886s. Circulated, maybe AU though, and quite a striking coin. Pretty cool to hold a coin that is almost 130 years old, and admire the beauty.

I definitely want to start stacking some more old US coins. Any recommendations? I'm mostly interested in bullion and not numismatics, but don't mind paying a little bit more to have a coin with some history. I keep thinking this coin was in some leather pouch in someone's saddlebag, back in time.

Any recommendations?

Check if there is a MADE IN CHINA on it anywhere. Sometimes they just say REPLICA in really small print.

Oh, I can tell a gold coin by the weight in my hand.

I guess this isn't a gold forum anymore, after all, based upon this response.

I love pre-33 US gold, it's a refreshing reminder that we used to have a honest money system in this country. Plus, it is amazing to hold an old coin and wonder how many hands it traded through, and the things it bought back in the day. I have a $5 classic head gold, minted when Andrew Jackson was president. I like to hold it and imagine the hands it was in when Jackson was president. What different times!!

Yeah, these old coins sort of stop time. Makes you think. I imagine what San Francisco was like back in 1886, where my coin was minted, and all the freedoms those people had at the time.

I keep a 1922 silver peace dollar in my wallet.

We were born too late. I wish for gold and silver to trade hands again.
