Warships ready in Indonesia to evacuate haze victims
25th October 2015
‘Indonesia has prepared warships and ferries in case it needs to evacuate people affected by an acrid haze caused by illegal forest fires across the country.
“For now, the ships will be standing by. We will begin evacuation when there is an instruction from the government,” Navy Spokesman Muhammad Zainuddin told AFP on Saturday.
The Indonesian government sent ships to haze-affected provinces, including the two main central islands of Kalimantan and Sumatra to evacuate victims, especially children and women, if necessary.
Thousands of fires made by farmers clearing land for plantations for the palm oil, pulp, and paper industries have choked much of Southeast Asia with thick toxic smog floating in the air. For two months now, the toxic cloud has forced schools to close and scores of flights and some international events to be cancelled.’

Threat of acrid haze from forest fires has caused respiratory illnesses
Two months of fires caused by slash-and-burn farming led to serious air pollution
This is the moment desperate evacuees took to their motorbikes in a desperate attempt to escape the acrid haze and choking pollution caused by thousands of forest fires in Indonesia.
For nearly two months, thousands of fires caused by slash-and-burn farming in Indonesia have choked vast expanses of Southeast Asia, forcing schools to close and scores of flights o be cancelled.
Warships have even been put on standby to evacuate victims from haze-affected provinces, especially children and women, while pollution caused by the fires has killed at least 10 and caused respiratory illnesses in half a million.

So far health facilities on the ground in Kalimantan are still trying their best, we are just getting ready by deploying warships,' Tatang said.
'For now the ships will be standing by. We will begin evacuation when there is an instruction from the government,' navy spokesman Muhammad Zainuddin told AFP.
The government has deployed around 30 aircraft to fight the fires and for cloud seeding with 22,000 troops on the ground to combat the blazes.
The fires have killed 10 people so far, with some of the victims dying from fighting the blaze and from respiratory illnesses caused by the pollution

fines only for this high crime, while the businesses involved should be closed down and all the CEOs being sent to jail for a very looooong time.
never mind, the goal is achieved.

The ministry said Singapore would pursue legal action against “errant companies responsible for the haze” and called on Indonesia to respond to “our repeated requests to share information” on the firms.
Paper and palm oil firms have been blamed for deliberately setting off fires to clear land—including flammable peat-rich terrain—for cultivation, a traditional practice aggravated this year by drier-than-usual conditions due to the El Niño weather phenomenon.
Singapore last month launched legal action that could lead to massive fines against Indonesian companies.
Five Indonesian companies including multinational Asia Pulp and Paper, part of the Sinar Mas conglomerate, have been served with legal notices. AFP

Haze from Indonesian forest fires has spread to the Philippines, disrupting air traffic and prompting warnings for residents to wear face masks, authorities say.
The southern Philippine island of Mindanao is more than 1,200 kilometres from the nearest fires but the haze has become a worsening problem across the island over the past week, aviation authorities said.
It spread to the country's central islands of Cebu and Negros on Friday, disrupting air traffic, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines spokesman Eric Apolonio said.
Eight domestic flights have been cancelled and dozens delayed since the problem began on October 16, affecting thousands of passengers, he added.
On some occasions, pilots could not see the airstrip as they were coming in to land.
"If you cannot see the runway it is very dangerous. You cannot always depend on instruments," Mr Apolonio said.
He said the flight delays were also disrupting the busy airport of capital Manila, with some Mindanao-bound flights being held back.

Dr David Mendoza, regional epidemiologist, warned: “Indonesia’s haze is made of smoke, particles, and pollutants like carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and sulphurdioxide. They can irritate the eyes, skin, sinuses, and throat of children, elderly, and those with diabetes, heart and lung conditions.”
Drink plenty of water, eat healthy food, exercise indoors, stay at home, and wear face mask when going outside,” said Mendoza, adding the health department began an information health campaign in the south.
Indonesia’s haze problem has perennially affected Malaysia and Singapore, more recently, Papua, the Philippines and Thailand, or a total of 30 million suffering from the environmental malady this year, said scientist Herry Purnomo of Indonesia’s Centre for International Forestry Research.
