View Full Version : red spot on a 999.9 gold coin?

This really surprised me. I inventoried a stash from years ago, found a 1/4 oz gold philharmonic from austria had a red spot on it. Small, but noticeable. On a 999 coin? This really surprised me. I've seen red spots on 22 carat coins, like krugs, but never expected a spot on a 999.9 coin.

At the time, I bought two of them from a very respectable online dealer. The other coin was fine. Both are beautiful coins, strikingly.

Thanks cheka. Maybe that spot will turn that bullion coin into a numismatic? :) Rare, red spot on 999.9 coin, yours for 50% over spot.

Never seen it on a .9999.

.999 Panda's are known for occasional spots.

I've seen a red spot on a Canadian Maple Leaf before. I know it's not a big deal, but it is visually distracting to the coin. Your eye is immediately drawn to the red dot.

That's exactly what happened to me, when I looked at the coin. I immediately saw the red dot, about the size of a pinhead. I took the coin out of the air tite thinking something got in there.

A couple of things to note. I'm glad I bought two of these coins. I can admire the other one now. :) If this had been my only gold phillie, I'd be bothered by this. Secondly, it's good to pull up your stash and inspect it occasionally, regardless of how inconvenient that might be to do.

I've noticed that

Once I pulled out a tube of SAEs that I had in storage for maybe two years. The coins were clean and pristine when I stored them. After I opened the tube, I saw that the top coin was covered with deep gray/black splotches all over the observe of the top coin. I have no idea how it got tarnished so bad. The only thing I could come up with was contaminants in the tube. The bright side is, when speaking about bullion, tarnished coins are just as valuable. Ugly tarnished coins can make your numismatics less valuable though, like this fingerprint on an old silver dollar:

There's a little air at the top of your tube under the green cap, fill it.

If your silver or gold starts to taste different, let me know. I'm doing a taste test survey.

Gold is still worth spot. Sell it and get something you like.

I've sold items only to re-buy other things.

This is a good idea, thanks ximmy. I actually didn't think about that possibility. I may see if I can trade it for a pre-33 coin, maybe I'll take in a few gold coins and see what my local dealer can trade. It's good to change things up.

You have to taste it first before selling it.

If its cherry flavored there should be a premium point involved.

I get a minty taste. That's only during cuddling and kissing, afterwards.

You should save it for use before kissing and cuddling then, it will reduce your risk of bad breath.

That's interesting, maybe posting a picture would help everyone visualize this red spot? I have never encountered such a spot on a coin.

I've seen a couple tiny red spots on a Kruggerand I owned once, but nothing major.

I would throw it away before it infects the rest of the collection!

Exactly what I was thinking. Franks, send that coin to me immediately for decontamination and disposal. (send any others with red spots too. We wouldn't want it to spread) :)

I've had red spots on two different Pandas. I decided to trade them but only to avoid any counterfeit issues down the road with anything Chinese.
