I saw this on one of the Geek News websites, about an iPhone accessory camera that does
iPhone imaging.

I would guess that there already exists hardware to bolt an iPhone onto a Picatinny rail so it can be used as a targeting tool.

It seems logical that this capability would be extended to Infrared.

The US military has it ... cops have it (LEO uses IR imaging to monitor grow-ops going back 20 years).

So - when does the general public get the technology ?

Well, I haven't seen it at any of the firearm etailers (PSA, Midsouth, Impact, Tombstone, Midway) but still -

it just seems logical that the tech would flow down to the Gen. Pub.

For precision shooting night vision is better than IR because it's easier to ID your target with NV than it is IR. IR works better on overcast moonless nights, but still not so good for target ID. Don't want to be shooting anyone who doesn't deserve it, so gotta be much more careful and deliberate with IR sighting.

Both are readily available for rifle sights if one has the stroke. Tip: don't try to get by on the cheap, you'll be disappointed. DYODD

A decent new Raytheon mil-spec IR rifle sight can be had for $5k, although dated now it's a bargain for what it does. Someone who sells those units advised me to get NV night sight before IR sight because of the target ID issue. The FLIR IR rifle sights are into five figures.

I'll keep my eyes open in the tech geek media and the firearms etailers.

You would need an ap to superimpose a cross hairs.

You would also need a way to align iPhone-scope center (position) and iPhone-scope rotation (an imginary perpendicular from the center of the camera, no tube to work with), for doing the normal up-down right-left calibration procedure.

I think I might have some money in my 2017 budget for that. :)
