A National Hanukkah Menorah is lit on the White House grounds, at the Ellipse during the eight day Jewish holiday commemorating the Jewish Maccabees' military victory over Syrian oppression more than 2,000 years ago. During Hanukkah, Jews across the world celebrate the miracle of light that burnt for eight days out of a single-days-worth of oil found in the Temple. One Hanukkah candle is lit the first night, and an additional candle is lit each successive night.
The holiday is a celebration of religious freedom and hope.

After more than three decades, the annual television special Christmas in Washington has come to an end.
TNT severed its ties with the special's producer last year, and a new network was never found, therefore the White House tradition is coming to an end.
The special, which first started in 1982, was attended by the first family and attended by a variety of musical acts. At the end of the performance, the president and his family would come onstage and join in a singalong with all of the performers.
Last Christmas: Christmas in Washington, the annual White House holiday special, is coming to an end after 33 years. Above, President Obama and family attend the final television event
Last year's special was hosted by Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, and featured performances by Rita Ora, Christina Perri, and other musicians.
The Washington Post reports that George Stevens Jr and his son Michael, who have produced the special in recent years, came to an end of their 15-year partnership with TNT last year.
The father and son duo were looking for another network but were unsuccessful and won't be putting on Christmas in Washington this year.
Michael Stevens died October 15 from complications due to stomach cancer. He had been directing the show since 2004.
The Stevens production company was also recently fired as producers of the Kennedy Center Honors Gala.
George Stevens received an honorary Oscar lifetime achievement award in 2012.
The annual TV special benefited the Children's National Health system.
