Le Bourget (France) (AFP) - Nobel laureate Al Gore said at the Paris climate summit on Thursday that humanity must change how it lives, travels and grows food in order to avert global warming catastrophe.

"Do we really have to change the energy and transportation and agriculture and forestry systems in the world and shift to a low-carbon pattern?" the former US vice president asked in a speech.
"The answer is 'Yes'... because now the answer is coming from nature itself," he said.
Gore pointed to a string of extreme droughts, record-breaking downpours and high tides, along with melting Arctic ice as evidence of climate change.
"The television news every evening is like a nature hike through the Book of Revelations," said Gore, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 for his work on climate change.
He added that the scientific community is "virtually unanimous" on the existence of man-made climate change and the evidence is "just as clear as it is for the existence of gravity."
Gore is in the French capital for the global climate conference, which kicked off Monday with 150 world leaders in attendance and aims to craft a world agreement to cut emissions in order to curb global warming.
"Hopefully there will be no doubt that we are going to solve the climate crisis," Gore said during a separate press appearance on Thursday.
"One hundred and fifty heads of state, the largest number ever gathered in history, are in the same place on the same day, and not a single word of climate denial."
Gore also sounded a hopeful note about humanity's ability to end its reliance on fossil fuels and shift to green energy sources. He said the amount of electricity provided by wind has grown exponentially and the cost of solar power has plummeted.
"Business community, investors... and others have brought the technologies of solar photovoltaics, wind power and efficiency... to the point where these new approaches are extremely competitive," he said.
A slideshow put together by Gore about the dangers of climate change was the basis of the popular 2006 documentary "An Inconvenient Truth," which won two Academy Awards.
Negotiators in Paris will aim to strike a bargain that limits global temperature rise to two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) over pre-industrial times by limiting greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels.

Fighting a war on climate is the perfect war for flaccid western leaders to pass the time on. No one is shooting at them, they have plenty of time to hold meetings all over the world, who can possibly know if they are winning or losing, they get to plot and plan things in secret that spend trillions of dollars, so their friends get rich and kick a lot back into the politicians bank accounts. No matter what happens to the world their children and great grand children will be billionaires.

Look at them all living it up rich. Obama likes to point fingers and say who the largest culprits are when it comes to climate change. Here they are right in front of you. Do you know how much carbon was burned just to attend that get together? Apparently, these people never saw those GoToMeeting commercials. Aren't we trained now to hate the rich lifestyle? The People of the Earth should DEMAND that ALL private travel be banned. Now, take notice of something here - by my words, am I for or against doing something about climate change? It is indeterminate by these words, so, before you call someone with a degree in mathematics an idiot realize that you cannot challenge this statement unless you are a rich elite person who only wants regular people to pay additional taxes so that you can carry on with your disgustingly rich lifestyle. So, if you super rich, then, by all means, thumb my statement down because it interferes with your robbery and takeover of the World. ALL PRIVATE TRAVEL SHOULD BE BANNED AS PART OF THIS DEAL. Show how serious you are. What is good for us is good for you too. Don't be fools - DEMAND THIS!!!

I am starting to like the comments a yahoo this can not last to much longer ...................................I think a smart a thing this President could do would be to start with his own foot print. Turn the White House into a Green house, turn the temp down in winter & up in summer & issue an executive order for all government buildings to do the same. Take the lead & encourage all Americans to reduce their carbon foot print. Obama's carbon foot print is LARGE as much as he & Kerry fly. Americans are way too wasteful. A real LEADER could address this & our out of control FEDERAL spending to take steps to reduce the National Debt & people would back this. We don't have a President willing to reduce, reuse & recycle. Sad!

Report: The World Will Run out of Breathable Air Unless Carbon Is Cut

As representatives from 195 nations gather in Paris (http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/jun/02/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-paris-climate-summit-and-un-talks) to hammer out a global agreement to slash greenhouse gas emissions, a new study (http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs11538-015-0126-0) finds that the failure to do so could leave the world gasping for breath.

Marine plants such as phytoplankton are estimated to produce more than half the Earth’s atmospheric oxygen (http://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/facts/oceanproduction.html), according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. For the study, Sergei Petrovskii, an applied mathematics professor at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, calculated how unrestrained global warming could affect phytoplankton and thus the ocean’s ability to generate breathable air. He ran computer models that looked at what would happen to phytoplankton’s ability to photosynthesize at different temperatures.
If the world’s oceans warmed (http://www.takepart.com/article/2015/06/19/toxic-algal-bloom-climate-change-rising-water-west-coast) by 6 degrees Celsius—a realistic possibility if global emissions continue unabated—the tiny plants would halt oxygen production, according to the study, which was published Tuesday in the Bulletin of Mathematical Biology.

By 2100, the earth at sea level could have atmospheric oxygen levels comparable to the top of Mount Everest today. “And as far as I know, people cannot normally stay on Everest without oxygen masks for more than a few minutes,” Petrovskii said.
The threat has been “mostly overlooked” by climate scientists, Petrovskii said, noting that such a global disaster (http://www.takepart.com/article/2015/09/16/ocean-wildlife-population-down-half) would come with little notice.
“A distinct feature of this catastrophe is that there will be few warning signs and little change before it is too late,” he said. That’s because phytoplankton can continue to produce oxygen and photosynthesize at levels below 6 degrees of temperature rise.
“Under a 2-degree increase, we will probably see no change; the 4-degree increase would already be dangerously close,” Petrovskii said, adding that more research is needed to determine what increase in global temperatures would halt phytoplankton’s ability to photosynthesize.
