Washington (AFP) - The New York Times has published an editorial on its front page for the first time since 1920, using the rare, prominent placement to urge gun control following the latest mass shooting in the United States.

Entitled "End the Gun Epidemic in America," it lashes out at politicians and calls for certain types of weapons and ammunition to be outlawed for private citizens.
"It is a moral outrage and a national disgrace that civilians can legally purchase weapons designed specifically to kill people with brutal speed and efficiency," reads the editorial.
Its publication online late Friday and on page A1 of Saturday's print copy of the prestigious newspaper, comes just days after a couple went on a gun rampage in California, killing 14 people and wounding 21 others.
The carnage at a year-end office party represents the deadliest mass shooting in the United States since a 2012 Connecticut school massacre and is being investigated as an "act of terrorism," according to the FBI.
The Times said it was "right and proper" for authorities to probe whether the killers were connected to international terrorism.

But, it added, "the attention and anger of Americans should also be directed at the elected leaders whose job is to keep us safe but who place a higher premium on the money and political power of an industry dedicated to profiting from the unfettered spread of ever more powerful firearms."
Guns are a potent political symbol in the United States, where the right to bear arms is enshrined in the constitution.
- 'The scourge of guns' -
And the powerful National Rifle Association gun lobby, reputed to have many members of Congress in its pocket, paints gun control propositions as attacks against that right.
The Times goes on to say that the United States, in contrast to other countries affected by gun violence, was not even trying to remedy the situation.

"Worse, politicians abet would-be killers by creating gun markets for them, and voters allow those politicians to keep their jobs," it said.
"It is past time to stop talking about halting the spread of firearms, and instead to reduce their number drastically -- eliminating some large categories of weapons and ammunition."
In particular, it said, certain types of weapons, including the slightly-modified combat rifles used in the California attack, in addition to certain kinds of ammunition, "must be outlawed for civilian ownership."
In a statement, the paper's publisher, Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., said the reason for running the editorial on the front page was to "to deliver a strong and visible statement of frustration and anguish about our country's inability to come to terms with the scourge of guns."
"Even in this digital age, the front page remains an incredibly strong and powerful way to surface issues that demand attention," Sulzberger said.
"And, what issue is more important than our nation's failure to protect its citizens?"
The Times said it published its last Page One editorial on June 13, 1920, critical of the nomination of Warren Harding as the Republican presidential candidate.

reading the comments on yahoo are like being on the forum here ....We who have an actual working brain know that those who scream for gun control care nothing about the victims or the rights of Americans who want to protect themselves from this kind of terror and evil hate. They only want to control us and keep us from having the ability to stand up to tyranny and any other form of Government anti Constitutional executive orders that an "Idiot" might try to force on us law abiding Constitutional loving gun owning Americans! Article One, section 8. Give congress(federal govt) the power to raise and support the army and navy(national military). The 2nd Amendment was meant for the individuals, the people to bear and keep arms to resist against a possible tyrannically govt that will use it military to oppress them and infringe on their Rights as citizens of the Republic. If the founders intent for the people to only be armed during wartime by the federal govt, why won't they just outright say so? Why have two separate parts in the Constitution that say the same thing about the people having the “right” to a national military? Because the founders never intent to armed just the military, but the whole population of the Republic to resist against foreign enemies and if have to domestic one, like the federal military.

Just another attempt to disarm Honest Americans. Do you really think the criminal filth of our nation will give up they're guns? Are you that stupid? Criminals don't follow existing gun laws. Do you think the War on Drugs worked? Are you really that stupid?
You cannot legislate morality. Just remember this: Thomas Jefferson, Third US President and Author of The US Constitution, stated these words:
"The strongest reason for the people to retain their right to keep and bear arms is as a last resort to protect themselves against tyranny in government".
If as a US Citizen you fail to see that this is precisely that time, right now, that We The People have found ourselves in; you are either incredibly naive, or outright stupid.
Arm yourselves now. Buy all the ammunition you can carry. Its time to take our country back from the sleazy, corrupt, lawyer/politician filth, that has commandeered our political, justice, and financial systems, and sold out We The People on all fronts.
BUY GUNS AND AMMUNITION NOW. Vote with it.

the attention and anger of Americans should also be directed at the elected leaders whose job is to keep us safe The sad truth is that too many Americans really believe the government's job is to keep us safe. It's not. Their job as originally intended, is to protect our liberties. Nowhere in the founding documents of this country does it state that the governments job is to keep us safe.

New York City mayor urges city pension funds to divest gun stocks

NEW YORK | By Edward Krudy (http://blogs.reuters.com/search/journalist.php?edition=us&n=edward.krudy&)
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio urged the city's pension funds on Friday to divest their holdings in stocks of gun makers after this week's mass shooting in San Bernardino, California.
Two of the funds in the city's $155 billion pension system dropped their holdings in gun manufacturers such as Smith & Wesson Holding Corp and Sturm Ruger & Co Inc after the Sandy Hook school shooting in 2012.
Those two funds were the New York City Employees Retirement System and the New York City Teachers Retirement System. Funds for the city's police and fire departments and the city's board of education have not divested.
"I call on all government pension funds in New York City and across the country to divest immediately from funds that include assault weapon manufacturers," de Blasio said in a statement.
De Blasio also appealed to private investors to dump gun stocks and funds that invest in them.
Wednesday's massacre in San Bernardino, in which 14 people were killed, was the worst U.S. mass shooting since 26 children and adults were shot dead at an elementary school in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, in December 2012.
The mayor urged the city comptroller "to divest as soon as possible if no verifiable assurance is given that assault weapons will not be sold to civilians."
The comptroller's office, which oversees the funds, said it was down to the mayor to present detailed plans to pension fund board members.
"We look forward to receiving that proposal," said John McKay, a spokesman for the comptroller. "Gun violence is a real and constant threat to our children, families and communities."
Investments in gun makers across the three funds amounted to $2.1 million, as of Sept. 30, according to a person with knowledge of the assets. The person asked not to be named as the funds do not publish detailed asset lists. The three funds had assets of $46 billion as of that date, the person said.
The comptroller's office could not immediately say which gun stocks are held by the funds.
New York City's pension system is complex. The five funds each have separate boards staffed by around 50 board members, including city officials and labor union representatives.
The Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, New York City's largest police union, did not return a request for comment. The Uniformed Fire Officers Association and trustees for the Board of Education Retirement System could not be reached.

They pulled it out in 2012, lost a ton of interest too. Just shows you how much .gov control has on the people stuck in those systems.
