The original Dodge Charger Daytona was never a huge hit but today examples can sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Getting a six-figure sum for this one, though, could be a tough task.
The car is set to go under the hammer at a Mecum Auctions event in Kissimmee, Florida next month and the current estimate is $150,000-$180,000. And, yes, it has a lot going for it. For starters, the Charger Daytona was only built for one year, and this one is a numbers matching example with many of its original pieces (503 were produced in 1969). The paint has been changed, though, as the car came from the factory in cherry red with white stripes.

Under the hood is the famous Dodge 440 Magnum V-8, which is mated to a three-speed TorqueFlite automatic. Some of the special features that originally came with the car include headrest-equipped bucket seats, a factory-chromed floor shifter in the center console, and the intact dash cluster with clock/tach assembly.
However, the years have clearly got to it. Judging from the images, many elements will need to be completely replaced—should the buyer want to restore it—and that will likely cost some big bucks plus hurt the untouched factor.

The car was bought new by a judge in Alabama, apparently for his wife. She must not have liked it as the judge ended up selling the car in 1974. The second owner kept the car up until recently. Its odometer reading is just 20,533 miles.
Mecum’s Kissimmee auction runs from January 14-24, 2016. Some of the other highlights include a 1970 Plymouth Superbird (the successor to the Charger Daytona), a 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L88, and a Daytona 24 Hours-winning 1989 Porsche 962.

Sweet car. Drove one in '69. It was a 440 dual quad, in that orange color. Also drove a 1970 Superbird, 3x2, 426 Hemi. Each was a trip to drive. There was always a crowd around it. They were demo cars that Chrysler sent around to various shows. Back then I worked for a car magazine and got to see/drive many a classic.

Me? I am a very simple guy........I whished that I had my 64 Corvair which I bought while in the army for $650, the insurance was only $37.....went to Fla and Mexico with it.....took the engine apart and after putting it back together again I found a bunch of parts under the back cover on the ground......but.......the car was running just great without them.....so.....I left them out........just like my life, always lucky.

I liked the automatics. They had a lever on the dashboard (with a pointer indicating the gear) like one sees on a toaster. If you power-braked them the rear ends would squat. So you could sit at a traffic light and make the rear go up and down.

Buy it and ship it to Legendary Motor car for restoration. Probably cost another $100k but you would end up with a award winning show car. Nice car. Like Mopars.

One of these sold for $900K earlier this year. David Spade is supposed to have bought it.

Those are all B body cars. In high school I had a '68 Dodge B body factory hot rod with a built 440 ~425 hp 4 speed w/ Dana 60 posi w/ 3.90 gears. It would get air under the front wheels when launched and would pass everything but the gas station. The previous owner told me he had it up to 160+. I had enough fun at 145 one night (it was still accelerating at the same rate).

NASCAR outlawed the Daytona and the Superbird 'cause they made for an unfair advantage. There are counterfeit Daytonas and Superbirds but it's easy to spot an original if you know what to look for.

1st car definitely looks like an original, 2nd car definitely a clone/counterfeit, 3rd car appears to be original.

so that one looks like it has the original back window. It says it is almost a numbers matching car. That's pretty important.

These cars were built for CanAm racing weren't they? A golden age of American auto racing where you could really innovate. But then someone wanted a level playing field and that competition died. Basically because you couldn't do anything to you cars outside a set of regulations.

I'm sure some of you guys know way more about that era.

I love the shaker, the road runner and cars from that time.

I new a guy that had a superbird/daytona back in the late 70's. Even then it was worth a lot of money. His had a 440 but I think they come with the Hemi too. Another friend had a 440 powered 4 speed GTX . Another buddy bought an old 440 powered cop car that went like stink and was built like a tank. He was towing another buddies car and smoked the tires for a block towing it (goofy times for sure). Those 440's were a lot of fun...

The Superbirds came with either a 440/4bbl, a 440/six-pack (3x2bbls, center 2 bbl was primary, end 2 bbls were secondary), or a very underrated 426hp 426 hemi with dual quads. I don't recall what the Daytonas came with.

I recall that the Plymouth dealership where I grew up had a new white Superbird on display in front of the dealership that was there forever like they were unable to find a buyer.

Amazing, today everything is so fragile. You drop your phone on the ground it breaks. Spill something on your laptop, poof, all gone.

Yet, romp on the gas peddle of 69 charger, off to the races...

I remember a '65 plymouth valiant, slant 6. We didn't stop at stop signs, we drove through the sign, it tumbled on top of the car and said goodbye after the trunk.

I'm convinced that 2 door coupes, bucket seats and four on the floor were among the most insidious birth control creations ever
and contributed greatly toward white genocide and the decimation of drive-in movies.

A 4 door sedan, bench seats, a girl and a 12 pack made for a happy high school boy.
For me it was never about how fast I was off the line, or whether I could smoke the tires.

Do you remember the shitty speakers we had to hang from our windows. Damn, I feel old. Those drive-ins though, that's a piece of American culture I'm proud I actually lived.

I remember the drive ins. Slowly they disappeared and were turned in to malls. I think there a still one or two around. We had those window mount speakers. They were replaced with these little aerial clips so you could listen on your FM radio.

Sneaking in a group of friends in the trunk/boot. Of course you and your girl at the drives.

My ultimate story about that car is:

When I used to cruise Telegraph Road in Detroit in the mid-80's there was a guy who had this car with 12k miles on it and the [I]window sticker in it still. I loved the car but he was beating it up street racing. Don't know if it even made it to the 90's.

Yeah, it's all good. That's just the lowest I remember it. It was $0.59 a litre this last spring/summer. Adding in inflation, and exchange rate, it may be on par or cheaper....
