A woman drove onto the sidewalk on a busy part of the Last Vegas Strip to mow down pedestrians on Sunday night, police say.

One person was killed and at least 30 others were injured.

The AP reports:

"Police believe this was an intentional act by a woman in her 20s who 'went up and off these streets, two or possibly three times,' Lt. Dan McGrath said. Police did not give a possible motive.

"The woman is being interviewed and is having her blood drawn, police said. She is being held in the Clark County jail with charges pending.

"'This is a huge tragedy that has happened on our Strip,' Boffelli said."

During a press conference, McGrath described the suspect as a black female in her 20s who was driving with a three-year-old child in the car.

The Las Vegas Review Journal adds:

"Bystander Justin Cochrane told the Review-Journal he witnessed an older, brown Oldsmobile plow into people, slow down and accelerate again.

"He said people were chasing the car, which he described as having a busted-out windshield. Cochrane said he saw the car 'crushing' people, including someone he described as a kid who looked about 10 years old.

"Rabia and Atif Qureshi, who also witnessed the crash, said the vehicle plowed into pedestrians, sending them flying like 'bowling pins.'"

The paper reports that six people who were critically injured are now in stable condition.

Prosecutors likely will ask that one of their mental health experts be allowed to examine the 31-year-old before he is sent to a state psychiatric hospital in an effort to restore his competency before he goes to trial.

Miles is charged with capital murder, accused of ambushing deputy Darren Goforth at a Cypress area gas station on Aug. 28.

Monday's development was not unexpected, since court records showed that he previously had been found incompetent to stand trial in Travis County and also was committed to a state mental health facility in an earlier case.

The issue of competency centers on whether a mental health professional determines a person is mentally healthy enough to aid in their own defense, which is different than a defense of not guilty by reason of insanity, a determination usually made by a jury.

A 24-year-old woman

Lakeisha N. Holloway appeared “stoic” when cops encountered her soon after the 1996 Oldsmobile sedan she was driving plowed into a crowd on the Las Vegas Strip multiple times – all while a young child was sitting in the backseat.

“She didn’t appear to be distressed due to her actions,” Sheriff Joe Lombardo said during a Monday news conference.

Holloway was booked Monday on charges including murder, first-degree child abuse or neglect and failing to stop at the scene of an accident, according to Clark County Detention Center records.

Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said he anticipated also filing numerous counts of attempted murder. The charge of fleeing the scene is a felony and, as of Oct. 1, is a non-probationable offense.

He said seeking the death penalty was “a consideration.”

Authorities said Sunday they “know this was not an act of terrorism,” though Lombardo did leave some wiggle room on Monday.

“As of now we do not believe it to be an act of terrorism,” he said, noting that officials were not “100 percent ruling out the possibility” and are working with the FBI.

“The act is going to be very hard to explain at face value,” said Lombardo, who reiterated that whatever the ultimate classification, cops believe the carnage was “an intentional act.”

Lombardo also suggested a falling out with the child’s father could be a possible motive, though he said authorities believed the father was living in Dallas.

“At some point we believe she was attempting to make her way that direction through Las Vegas,” Lombardo said.

But Holloway never made it out of the city following a horrific scene on the Strip that she’s accused of creating.

The driver “went up and off these streets, two or possible three times,” Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Lt. Dan McGrath said. The suspect then allegedly drove off before being apprehended outside the Tuscany Casino. After Holloway pulled into the casino lot, Lombardo said, she left her child in the car, approached a valet and told him “she ran over some individuals on Las Vegas Boulevard.”

Holloway did not demonstrate signs of being under the influence of alcohol, Lombardo said, though a police expert believed she was under the influence of “some sort of stimulant.” Results of a blood test are pending.

Part of the reason Lombardo said he can’t discount terrorism as a motive is Holloway’s murky background. Investigators believe she’s originally from the Oregon area, but otherwise have hit roadblocks.

Holloway was convicted of operating a vehicle without driving privileges and driving uninsured in December 2011, according to Oregon court records obtained by oregonlive.com.

A woman named Lakeisha Holloway, and fitting the description of the woman booked in Las Vegas, was profiled in an Oregon paper, The Skanner, in 2012 after she won a CARE Role Model award. That article details Holloway’s struggles in high school, including being homeless during her freshman year. Holloway also described her mother’s battles with alcohol. The Skanner piece noted that Halloway wanted to pursue a career in forestry service.

A Facebook page for a woman believed to be Halloway shows images of a newborn daughter in 2012 and a photo of the Paris Hotel & Casino in October 2012 – more than three years before she’s suspected of driving into a crowd of people outside that structure with that child in the vehicle.

The crash unfolded at around 6:40 p.m. local time (9:40 p.m. EST). A woman's car was in the northbound lanes of Las Vegas Boulevard near Bellagio Way when it drove up onto the sidewalk in front of the Paris and struck pedestrians, police Lt. Peter Boffelli said. Witnesses said the car appeared to be travelling about 30 to 40 mph.

The incident took place in one of the busiest areas of the Strip, across from the famous dancing water fountains of the Bellagio hotel-casino.

The woman who died was 32-year-old Jessica Valenzuela, according to Clark County Coroner John Fudenberg. Valenzuela, of Buckeye, Ariz., was visiting Las Vegas with her husband, Fudenberg said. An autopsy is scheduled for later Monday and the cause of death is pending.

Spokesman Glen Sachet said Lakeisha Holloway performed administrative functions for the agency before resigning in 2012.

Sachet said she joined the agency in 2009 and took a four-month break in late 2010.

A woman killed on the Las Vegas Strip after a driver plowed into pedestrians Sunday was a loving mother of three young daughters and a faithful churchgoer.
Jessica Valenzuela, 32, was visiting Las Vegas with her husband when a car veered into a large crowd, killing her and injuring more than 30 others.


"There are absolutely no words to express how devastating and shocking this loss is. She will be missed dearly, and that couldn't be more of an understatement," Valenzuela's brother, Bryan Roessler, wrote on Facebook.
"She had a dorky personality and sense of humor and was loved by everyone she came in contact with." Roessler told KUSA, the NBC affiliate in Denver (http://www.9news.com/story/news/local/2015/12/21/las-vegas-strip-crash-victim/77733108/), that Valenzuela was a "fantastic stay-at-home mother" who was in Las Vegas with her husband. According to a Facebook page that appeared to belong to Valenzuela, the two had recently celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary.


The family had just moved in July from Thornton, Colorado, to Buckeye, Arizona, according to Roessler. Valenzuela grew up in Minnesota and Arizona, he added.
According to Artie Woodcox, the pastor at First Southern Baptist Church of Buckeye, Valenzuela had recently started attending weekly Bible study classes at his church.
"I only met her a couple of months ago, but she was definitely faithful once she started coming, and I knew she was a believer," Woodcox told NBC News. "She seemed to be a very sweet lady."


While Valenzuela attended Bible study, her three daughters would go to the children's activities offered by the church.
"My wife, who works with preschool and children, said that her children are just very, very, sweet, that they look forward to seeing them in there," Woodcox said. "One of the other preschool caregivers that we have talked to my wife last night and said, 'Those little girls are so sweet. That's probably indicative of [Valenzuela].'"
Roessler said Valenzuela "loved her kids, husband, and family as much as anyone could."
"She had a dorky personality and sense of humor and was loved by everyone she came in contact with," he told KUSA.


At Bible study, Woodcox said, Valenzuela was "pretty quiet" and "attentive." The final time he saw her was last Wednesday night, when Valenzuela sat at a table with Woodcox and his wife.
"We said goodbye and Merry Christmas, and that was it."

Police are refusing to reveal the motive behind yesterday’s shocking attack when a woman deliberately ploughed her car into dozens of people in Las Vegas.

The culprit responsible for the horrifying incident, which killed one person and injured another 35, has been named as Lakeisha N. Holloway.

Immediately following her rampage, Holloway drove to a nearby hotel and told a valet to call 911, explaining why she had carried out the attack, although her motive remains a mystery because police are “uncomfortable” about disclosing it, according to Fox News’ Will Carr.

LAS VEGAS (AP) – There won’t be a trial anytime soon for a 25-year-old woman accused of killing one pedestrian and injuring at least 34 others by intentionally driving a car onto a Las Vegas Strip sidewalk.

A judge on Friday ordered Lakeisha Nicole Holloway sent to a state mental hospital for evaluation.

Holloway argued with Clark County District Court Judge David Barker, said she didn’t trust the public defenders handling her case, and muttered to herself while Barker declared her unfit.

The judge noted that one doctor found Holloway wasn’t competent, and she refused a second evaluation.

Holloway’s lawyers, Joseph Abood and Scott Coffee, say it’s clear she’s mentally ill.

Holloway is accused of 71 felonies including murder, attempted murder and battery with a deadly weapon in the Dec. 20 crash.

I saw a video clip from the court appearance, there was nothing there indicating a severe enough mental disorder, warranting mental care instead of prison/death penalty, iow she was lucent and responded to the judges requests.

I don't thinking hanging from an oak tree would be necessarily fair. I doubt there's many oak trees in Vegas, and why waste the people's time trying to find one. A lamp post should work, and would be quick and everyone can go for coffee afterwards.
