An honest waiter (chased me down to point out that the tip was already included in the bill).
A homeless pregnant woman outside Penn Station.
A man asleep in the pews of St Patrick’s Cathedral.
A homeless man on 5 Ave with a young cat in a harness to keep him company.
A cross eyed man sleeping on a bench on the blue line at 34th.
I received an unexpected check for $50 just prior to having to go to the city for work. Being it was “found” money I wanted to pay it forward. I cashed the check and got 5 - $10 bills. Over the next 4 days I traveled the city in my spare time. These were the folks to whom I paid it forward. They all had one thing in common…..not ONE of them asked for anything. Had no sign with a catchy “beggars” phrase, and generally made no eye contact at all. People minding their own business (what little business they have). $10 isn’t going to change their lives, nor mine. But it felt good to do a little something for people not looking for anything. While NYC is full of greed and mistrust, there are still real flesh and blood folks out there like all of us. Some just have far more struggles.
Merry Christmas to you all and may your actions toward others bring you rewards that can’t always be measured in Silver & Gold.
