Andrew Damien Wilkie (born 8 November 1961, Tamworth, New South Wales, Australia) is an Australian politician and independent federal member for Denison. He has been an army officer and an intelligence analyst.
In 2003 Wilkie resigned from his position in the Office of National Assessments, an Australian intelligence agency, over concerns that intelligence was being exaggerated for political purposes in making the case for Australia's contribution to the 2003 invasion of Iraq under the Howard government.[1]
A man with a conscience. He was basically run out of his job because he was exposing the lies and corruption at the heart of the 2003 Iraq invasion, they even threatened to prosecute him because of his outspoken views.

They probably all cleared out or never bothered to show. Do it on a day there is a vote for a pay rise and you are guaranteed a full house/senate.
Change one law: Vote on parliamentary pay goes to the people not the parliament.
I think you would get a lot of participation from the people on that vote.

Apparently a precursor requirement to be elected deputy speaker of the house is faking interest in representative's speeches.
