FAIRFAX, Va., Jan. 7 (UPI) -- President Barack Obama (http://www.upi.com/topic/Barack_Obama/) appeared on national television Thursday night in a town hall meeting to discuss a highly controversial issue that's taken center stage this week -- gun violence in America -- which he addressed with new executive orders intended to tighten gun controls in the United States.
The president appeared on the CNN special, titled Guns in America: Obama Town Hall, with host Anderson Cooper (http://www.upi.com/topic/Anderson_Cooper/). During the live telecast from George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., Obama spoke of his new efforts to fight gun violence, reflected on tragedies of the past and took questions from concerned members in the audience.
Thursday's town hall focused on the president's executive actions, announced Tuesday (http://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2016/01/06/White-House-lawmakers-say-Obamas-actions-will-make-communities-safer-from-guns/1821452132678/?spt=sec&or=tn), seeking to cut gun violence through four main efforts: tightening background checks, committing to making communities safer, increasing mental health treatment and implementing safer gun technology. Some of the measures sidestep congressional approval while others require legislative backing.
One of the main goals of his orders is to close a loophole (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqxh9oTmz58) allowing gun sales by private parties at gun shows and over the Internet without conducting a background check.
Some Republicans in Congress have denounced Obama's actions as an unnecessary and unlawful breach of the Second Amendment.
"One of the most frustrating things that I hear is when [lawmakers] say ... 'why don't you just enforce the laws that are on the books?'" Obama said. "And those very same members of Congress then cut the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' budgets to make it impossible to enforce the law."
Obama's proposal asks Congress to support resources in his fiscal 2017 budget for the addition of 200 new ATF agents and investigators to enforce existing gun laws.

Another concern voiced by critics is a fear the federal government is gradually seeking to reduce violence by taking guns away from the people -- a notion Obama called "imaginary fiction." (http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/07/politics/obama-executive-action-gun-control-town-hall/index.html)
"The way it is described, is that we are trying to take away everybody's guns," he added. "Our position is consistently mischaracterized."
Mark Kelly (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pvylv6z1qSU), a retired NASA astronaut and gun control advocate who launched the political action committee Americans for Responsible Solutions with his wife, former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords -- who was seriously injured in a 2011 assassination attempt -- said he has spoken with lobbyists and U.S. senators who have stated definitively that tighter controls on guns will certainly lead to a registry, then to confiscation and finally to a "tyrannical" government.
"With 350 million guns in 65 million places, from Key West to Alaska ... if the federal government wanted to confiscate those objects, how would they do that?" Kelly inquired.
"This notion of a conspiracy out there -- it gets wrapped up in concerns about the federal government. There's a long history of that. It's in our DNA. The United States was born suspicious of some distant authority," Obama replied, dismissing the notion as fiction.
"If you listen to the rhetoric, it is so over-the-top, it is so overheated," he added.
"This is not a proposal to solve every problem. It's a modest way of us getting started on improving the prospects of young men and young women ... the same way we try to improve every other aspect of our lives. That's all it is," Obama said, likening his action to the past introduction of seat belts and then air bags in the automobile industry -- steps that have led to fewer people dying in car accidents.
Thursday's town hall also touched on an editorial (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/08/opinion/president-barack-obama-guns-are-our-shared-responsibility.html?_r=0) written by Obama and published in The New York Times on Thursday, titled, "Guns Are Our Shared Responsibility."
"The gun industry is almost entirely unaccountable. ... Congress has blocked our consumer products safety experts from being able to require that firearms have even the most basic safety measures," Obama wrote in the op-ed, which also called on American voters to use their authority in the voting booth.
"One of the things you say in [the editorial] was you are not going to campaign for, vote for any candidate, regardless of what party they are in, if they do not support common sense gun reform," Cooper asked, which was followed by applause from the audience.
"Yeah, I meant what I said," Obama replied. "The majority of people in this country are a lot more sensible than what you see in Washington. And the reason that Washington doesn't work well, in part, is because the loudest, shrillest voices, the least compromising, the most powerful or those with the most money have the most influence. And the way Washington changes is when people vote. And the way we break the deadlock on this issue is when ... the National Rifle Association doesn't have a stranglehold on Congress in this debate."
The NRA, the nation's most powerful gun lobby, declined an invitation (http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/06/politics/nra-obama-gun-town-hall/index.html) to attend the town hall event, dismissing it as "a public relations spectacle orchestrated by the White House."
The Obama administration's outline of the president's executive actions (https://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2016/01/04/live-updates-what-president-doing-keep-guns-out-wrong-hands) says more than 20,000 American children under the age of 18 have been killed by gun violence in the last decade. It's one of the most sobering statistics on the issue for Obama, who shed tears announcing the new efforts Tuesday when recalling the Sandy Hook shooting rampage that killed 20 first-graders -- a moment replayed (http://www.cnn.com/videos/politics/2016/01/08/obama-guns-in-america-crying-newtown-shooting-town-hall-ac-07.cnn) for Obama at the town hall Thursday night.
"It's the only time I've seen the Secret Service cry on duty," Obama recalled of visiting Newtown, Conn., two days after the Dec. 14, 2012, shootings.

On Thursday, Obama again addressed gun violence and American youth after getting a question from a teen from his hometown of Chicago.
"Growing up as a young black teen in Chicago, you're surrounded not only by gun violence but police brutality as well. Most of us aren't thinking about life on a long-term scale," Tre Bosley, a black teen who lost his brother and other relatives to gun violence, told Obama (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2SN19jamzk). "What is your advice to those youth growing up surrounded by poverty and gun violence?"
"When I see you, I think about my own youth, because I wasn't that different than you," Obama replied. "My main advice to you is continue to be an outstanding role model for the young ones coming up behind you."
Obama added that it's not just homicides that will be impacted by his actions this week.
"It's not just inner-city kids who are at risk in these situations," he said. "Out of the 30,000 deaths due to gun violence, about two-thirds of them are actually suicides. ... those, too, are tragedies. Those , too, are preventable."
The president also touched on the $500 million investment his proposal makes to achieve improved access to mental health treatment -- as well as the final element of his orders, that call for the development of new modern gun safeties.
"Part of my proposal is also developing better technologies so that we can do tracing of shells when a crime is committed in order to figure out who exactly are the perpetrators crime and where did they obtain the weapon," Obama stated.
Outside the hall, demonstrators from both sides of the issue made their presence known.
The College Republican Federation Of Virginia gathered demonstrators near the auditorium for a "peaceful protest to support our Constitutional rights." Some said they planned to bring firearms to underscore their Second Amendment rights. It is legal to carry firearms in Virginia, but the university does not allow (http://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/weapons-on-campus/) them on campus.
Devon Flynn, chairman of the College Republicans at George Mason, (http://www.campusreform.org/?ID=7136) said the seemingly one-sided nature of the event is leaving many wondering if Obama's legislation will be a true bipartisan effort.
"This is to tell President Obama to stop playing partisan politics and to actually work together," he said about the protest. "He says one thing and does the complete opposite."
Counter demonstrators said they would also gather outside the auditorium (http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0d4dabab2da20-thank) Thursday night to "thank President Obama for taking decisive action to reduce gun violence through executive actions"

Cry me a river Obama, just who do you think uses guns for illegal activity,?ever wonder why blacks are getting shot, sheer reputation that's why, most robberies, murders, assaults, and other crimes associated with a gun is from a liberal welfare collecting brother of another color who thinks his color is going to save him, thinks he can pull the race card out and everything will be fine. so if you try and change the constitution regarding the 2nd amendment and think your going to end gun violence, think hard again, quit blaming Americans, some of these guns come from another country therefore will be acquired illegally and anyone who gets those guns can care less about your gun laws you illegally sign, We have to match the offense with the same defense to make the odds even.

PHOENIX (KPHO/KTVK) - Gun control was front and center Thursday night as President Barack Obama held a town hall meeting.

Following an executive order to try and prevent gun violence, there has been a lot of back and forth with some people agreeing with the decision and others deeply opposed.

One hundred people were invited to take part in the town hall and one person in attendance was Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, who is running for Arizona's 1st Congressional District seat.
The sheriff asked the president whether he thought his executive order would prevent any of the mass shootings that have taken place in the country.
Babeu said he wasn't pleased with the president's response to his question and that none of Obama's executive actions deal with the core of the problems -- criminals and people with mental health.
"This $500 million that he's proposing would probably just take care of Arizona," Babeu said. "Look, I've got 1,100 inmates in my jail and well over half of them have underlying mental health issues and people may see they're charged with assault or burglary or domestic violence yet they come into jail, we're ill-equipped to provide them mental health services. They're on a hamster wheel. They come out and they repeat this cycle again and again."
Although the town hall was very calm, there was some levity when Obama asked Babeu whether he really wanted to get into Congress. Babeu quickly responded, "I don't want your endorsement!"
It was a funny exchange and made the president laugh.

Taya Kyle, the wife of "American Sniper" Chris Kyle.

The widow of the former US Navy SEAL who inspired the movie "American Sniper" and was later killed by a former Marine at a shooting range pressed President Barack Obama on gun control in his televised CNN town-hall (http://www.businessinsider.com/obama-cnn-gun-town-hall-debate-2016-1) event Thursday night. Taya Kyle, the widow of Chris Kyle, and Obama engaged in a spirited back and forth.
Kyle argued that gun sales are going up as a result of safety concerns, not fear that Obama will take guns away, while the president said states with tighter gun laws have lower crime rates than states with looser ones.
Kyle questioned whether Obama's new executive action (http://www.businessinsider.com/barack-obama-anderson-cooper-guns-cospiracy-2016-1) would have any effect on shooting deaths in the US.
"I understand that background checks aren't necessarily going to stop me from getting a gun, but I also know that they wouldn't have stopped any of the people here in this room from killing. And so it seems like almost a false sense of hope," she said. "So why not celebrate where we are?"
She further questioned Obama on why he didn't provide "hope" to Americans by noting how violent crime has continued to dip (http://time.com/3577026/crime-rates-drop-1970s/) during the past three decades.
"Celebrate that we're good people and 99.9% of us are never going to kill anyone," she said.

Barack Obama.

After expressing gratitude to Kyle and her late husband for their service, Obama agreed that the reduction in violent crime is something that isn't celebrated enough in the country. "You wouldn't always know it from watching television," he said. "Most cities are safer than they were 10 or 20 years ago."
But he added: "I challenge the notion that the reason for that is because there is more gun ownership. Because if you look at where are the areas with the highest gun (http://www.businessinsider.com/having-a-gun-in-your-home-is-like-bringing-a-time-bomb-into-your-house-2016-1#comments) ownership, those are the places where the crime hasn't dropped that much. And if you look at the places where there are pretty stiff restrictions on gun ownership, the crime's dropped really quickly. So I'm not sure if there is a one-to-one correlation there."

The widow asked Obama to focus instead on the nation's falling crime rate.
"If we can give people hope and say also during this time while you've been president, we are at the lowest murder rate in our country, all-time low murders...why not celebrate where we are?" Kyle asked. "Celebrate that we're good people, and 99.9 percent of us are never going to kill anyone."
Obama acknowledged that Taya Kyle was correct about the nation's crime rate, but said that doesn't mean action shouldn't be taken to prevent further gun deaths.

Obama is on dope ! "I challenge the notion that the reason for that is because there is more gun ownership. Does he ever read Chicongo's papers about how many of his OWN RACE kill each other daily ? ---- And the State of Illinois REQUIRES a FOID card to buy a BB gun. Kids in the country can't even go out in their own back yard and shoot it without an adult present. Chicongo has some if not THE strictest gun laws and they are in the top 2% of all cities when it comes to their murder rate. The pres is a total IDIOT !!
