LeBron James is being called a public enemy — and much worse — in Israel following the Cavaliers' firing of David Blatt, the first Israeli NBA head coach.

The surprise decision Friday to fire Blatt made sports headlines in the U.S. In Israel, however, it was the biggest story in the news, according to The Jerusalem Post.

"The surprise sacking of Blatt despite leading the Cavs to the NBA Finals last year and to the best record in the Eastern Conference so far this season, saw millions of Israelis turn from fans to haters of the team and especially star LeBron James, who is widely held responsible for the coaching change."

Although born in Boston, Blatt moved to Israel more than 30 years ago. He married an Israeli woman, and the couple have raised four children there. The oldest two have already completed mandatory military service.

Social media is filled with crude comments in Hebrew by people blaming James for the decision. The Post reports one Israeli user on James Instagram feed noted, "Such a great player. Such a small, lame, pathetic personality. So drunk from all the fame and completely blind to see how fortunate you were to play under Blatt's guidance."

James noted Saturday he had nothing to do with Blatt's firing, saying he was "surprised" to learn of the move.

Some of the top officials in the nation of 8 million people have spoken out on the issue.

"I don't really understand the Cavs' decision to fire David Blatt after all his success. But I congratulate him, a wonderful man and a talented coach, on all his accomplishments, and wish him well in the future," US ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro wrote on Facebook .

The Cavs named Blatt as their coach after he led Maccabi Tel Aviv to the Euroleague title in 2013-2014.

Katz said during an appearance on an Israeli sports talk radio show that James caused the Heat to make poor roster moves during his four seasons in Miami. While the Heat appeared in the NBA Finals in each of those seasons and won two championships, Katz said the franchise was not prepared for James to return to the Cavaliers.

LeBron James is quite unpopular in Israel, according to this Cleveland.com piece, in the aftermath of David Blatt’s firing last Friday. David Blatt, an Israeli citizen and highly popular coach of Maccabi Tel-Aviv before joining the Cavaliers, has inspired some hatred in response to his sudden removal.

Via Agence France-Presse, sports journalist Sharon Davidovich described LeBron James as now the most hated man in Israel. “It’s a little bit joking and a little bit true: These days I can only compare the Israeli hate for LeBron James to the hate for Hamas,” said Davidovich. Yahoo says that one Israeli newspaper (no doubt the New York Post of Jerusalem) went with the headline “Goliath eliminates David” after Blatt was fired.

According to one player over there playing professionally, the Cavaliers have disappeared from the television.

Emails from cleveland.com to Netanyahu's press office and to Israeli Ambassador to the United States Ron Dermer to discuss the country's reaction to Blatt's firing were not immediately answered.

According to AFP, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro and Israeli Culture and Sport Minister Miri Regev both commented on Blatt's firing, with Shapiro questioning Facebook: "I don't really understand the Cavs' decision to fire David Blatt after all his success."

In June, a spokesman for Netanyahu said in an email that "the Prime Minister congratulated David (on reaching the Finals) and invited him to pay him a visit the next time he is in Israel."

The spokesman said Netanyahu also "invited the Cavs to come to Israel to play against the Prime Minister's Office basketball team."

Blatt, meanwhile, will be paid for the rest of this season and all of next season on the contract he signed when he was hired in 2014, which was worth up to $5 million a year for four years, sources said.
