School apologizes for student's viral racist rant

ELLICOTT CITY, Md (WUSA9) -- Several students at a Howard County high school are facing possible disciplinary actions for a disturbing and racist rant that was caught on video.

The tirade has been shared hundreds of times on social media. While one student films, another calls blacks "an inferior race" and says "who cares when some black man dies?"

Howard County superintendent Renee Foose called the video "disturbing" in a letter sent out to students and their families and believed the video could be a "teachable moment" not just on tolerance, but also on the potential consequences of spreading this kind of racial hatred.

The video, which was shot at a student’s home, is a 30 second rant about the Black Lives Matter movement. The Mt Hebron High School student berates African Americans while others in the crowd egg him on. Eventually he waves a $5 bill up to the camera to show President Lincoln's face and says “This guy is a traitor to the white race.”

The video went viral and was shared widely among students at the Ellicott City high school. School leaders are urging students to stop sharing it and to delete their posts about it.

“When you see the video, you should report it or delete the tweets or Facebook comments or messages,” said Rachel Lin, the student member of the school board.

The superintendent sent a message to all parents in the county saying the behavior will not be tolerated. Mt Hebron's principal has already scheduled meetings with the students and their parents.

“The student code of conduct actually does address behavior that's outside of schools,” said Howard County Schools Communications Director John White.

“Kid's in my physics class. Normal there, but...” said David Allen, is a junior at Mt Hebron who said he’s African American. Does he feel like there's discrimination against African Americans at the school?

“No, at least not from the teachers.” And what about the students? “A little bit here and there.”

“My personal opinion is black lives do matter,” said another student who was leaving wrestling practice. “I feel like every life does matter.”

“I don't think they're completely serious. But I don't think it's a very good joke if they are serious,” said Khiem Doan, 15, who said he’s Vietnamese American.

The ranting student has since apologized on Facebook for his comments. All the students we talked to Friday at Mt Hebron suggested that should be enough. They said he should be forgiven and everyone should move on. But it's unclear that's going to happen.

Students say this is not the first case of racism at Mt. Hebron. They say many African American students spend time between classes at an intersection of hallways and some students have taken to referring to that spot as quote "The Jungle."

A spokesperson for the high school says there's a new principal at the school and the superintendent is expecting changes.

I don't see a problem here...the blacks ARE inferior!
