Seems to be a trend, cooking oil cans as 'reinforcement' (filler) in structural concrete -

I think its actually paint. Not surprising really, but that building was finished 10 years or so ago. The Banks would not finance mortgages on it because of the dodgy construction. So it was known the building was dangerous. No one did anything about it.

I remember back in the day, Hong Kong high rise buildings and all the scaffolding was made from bamboo, tied together with bamboo twine. Many many stories up. Was cheap, easily replaced, renewable resource. No way I would have climbed it. Seems like they might still use it.

All well and good but when you are the company GM you have to go to the workers funerals. Pay the money etc.

Then of course there is the Asian Pile Driver.

The cans are good insulation. I bet it was tricky to keep them from floating out of place during the pour.

not if they are filled with toxic waste or some other kind of trash, mud. I wonder how much concrete was saved. Someone pocketed a nice little sum.

The Chinks wouldn't bother to bottle up toxic waste to get rid of it when there are so many accommodating rivers in that country.

Its a step up from mud and straw.

Mud and straw would be better actually I would think.

It should go without saying, but the thickness of the concrete is a factor in how strong the structure will be. No doubt the engineer designed a solid concrete structure and someone pocketed the difference, at the cost of the building collapsing. MR, do you have a link to the story where these photos were taken from?
