This is good news. These things were a disaster from inception. Who ever thought it was a good idea to fill our homes with a bulb you have to call hazmat if it breaks?

No kidding, I've been swapping out my dead bulbs with LED's. My electricity usage as dropped by almost 30 dollars a month so far and I'm only half way through on completing the swap out.

What LED you use

How do they hold up in cold weather?

I use Cree LED's. To give you an idea of LED durability. At my old house in Northern Indiana I used LED's in the outside light because I got tired of replacing the standard bulbs every 6 months, I could literally set my watch by their failure times I'm not kidding. Anyway I used some off the wall brand of LED as they were expensive 5 years ago, I stopped by (just to drive by) my old house just this past Christmas while I was in town and the same LED's I installed all those years ago are still the same ones as of December of 2015.

GE did. That's why they funded and petitioned for the outlawing of regular old incandescent bulbs. They made a lot of money selling these mercury filled bulbs for what originally was more than 10x the cost of regular bulbs. Now that CFL technology allows then to be manufactured cheap, they no longer make GE enough money, so they phase them out. Makes perfect sense.

sounds good Ares. I have never had to replace as many bulbs as I have these last 7 or 8 years of CFLs and I don't even bother putting in outside ones. They last maybe 4 weeks before blowing and at $4 AUD a pop for cheap ones..... I switched to halogen which are a bit better but not as good as the old incandescent. I feel like I am getting between 12 and 18 months out of these one. I pulled all my incandescent out and put them away for later. I only have a few left. Those last for years assuming your power is good. Another problem I have here is weird wiring.

LED's start around $9 here wholesale. I don't know any of the brands or their quality so I haven't bought any yet.

I heard a new better incadescent was on the way.

I hate these cFL things. Total rubbish abomination.

I use Cree bulbs since they are local here to the Carolina's. But if you want to look for LED bulbs, look on amazon and check the reviews. You can find LEDs with the same lumens (amount of light emitted) as a standard incandescent. Yeah it may be 3 or 4 times the price but they last 20 times as long and use less than 1/10th the power.

I bought a case of Toshiba LED's almost six years ago soon after they were available, I got a better price that way.
I still have over half the case left of new ones after replacing most of the lighting in my house.

They are built like a tank and have thick glass.

None of my Toshiba bulbs have failed up to this point. None!
