Michigan residents may be able to open and conceal carry without a permit if constitutional carry is passed.

Michigan may soon become the eighth state to have constitutional carry if legislation gets passed in the state government. It would join Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Kansas, Maine, Vermont and Wyoming if House Bills 5301-5304 are passed. If passed, these bills would allow for law-abiding gun owners to open carry and conceal carry without requiring government-issued permits.

“We are required to take a driver’s test occasionally to get or maintain our driver’s licenses, but tens of thousands of people are killed in traffic accidents every year, regardless of having passed a state-sanctioned training course and paying to obtain a license,” Rep. Runestad said.

“People are getting excited about the idea of more people concealing handguns, well this isn’t going to allow more criminals to do that,” Rep. Triston Cole (R-Mancelona) said to Fox 17. “This is about legal gun owners having more freedom and ability to carry their firearms.”

If constitutional carry passes, certain restrictions will remain in place such as penalties for unlawful possession of firearms. Additionally, this proposed law wouldn’t apply to individuals who can’t legally possess or carry concealed firearms.

Momentum for such legislation comes as more Michiganders with concealed carry licenses are stopping crime.

For example, Detroit Police Chief James Craig has encouraged law-abiding constituents to carry firearms to help ameliorate crime in the city—a campaign that began in December 2013 after seeing his constituents fall victim to crimes.

“When you look at the city of Detroit, we’re kind of leading the way in terms of urban areas with law-abiding citizens carrying guns,” Craig said in August 2015.

More recently, a valet driver for General Motors who was fired from his job after using his legal firearm to stop a stabbing was rehired after mass outrage broke out on social media.

The effects of constitutional carry in helping reduce crime in that state could be great. It’ll be interesting to see if this becomes law in Michigan soon.
