Fake one ounce silver bars from all the major mints:

Copper cores and silver plated. The good news is, the copper core will result in a weight different than 31.1 grams per bar. The bad news is you now must be very diligent in buying silver, take your scale and independently weigh each piece before buying.

1oz generic bars plated and encased in plastic, I wasn't aware such a silly thing existed!

Is this is like someone selling swamp property as arable land?

the plastic cases and plating must be worth near as much as the metal contained

How much are they selling them for, might be worth it?

You can always do the sound test. Just drop them on a glass table or on another bar and listen for that sound of silver.

and why they come in a plastic case no doubt.

ive never seen generic bullion encased in plastic, thats a red flag on site.

Not mine, I pulled the photo from a Facebook post, I think it was a CoinWeek post. No article to go with it.

I bet they were made back when silver was in the $30s and $40s. Very profitable at that price, maybe not so much today.

I would say that's a safe bet. It looks too costly to produce with silver hovering around <=$15 for quite a while

maybe over the internet, nobody that has a clue would purchase in hand at 2gs over

would not have made it to the here and now if 8years old.

sumtins fishy with these,,, to plate copper with silver is no swift case either. better off with just lead mix

wheres a photo with the plate etched off?

or some bonehead is weighing real bars with the 2gram plastic cover attached.

Think about it....those fakes may have been in investors hands for years. The investor, after discovering the fakes takes the opportunity to sell them at a much cheaper price than he paid, getting something back while hoping no one will notice given the high rate of buying going on the last 6-10 months or so

If you check out alibaba they are saturated with fakes, as low as .38 cents a piece. The chinese are a bunch of pieces of shit man.

thanks for sharing info, I just heard of fake coins flooding the market, so professionally done that really hard to get where the fake and where the real metal is

Lately I've only been buying new government bullion from APMEX. I don't know how much I trust the bargain bin at the local shop anymore.

I've had a few purchases from private sellers but the large majority of purchases I've made have been from reputable dealers like APMEX, JMB and Bay Metals. All have passed the weight and caliper tests (very important to have these tools if you're a PM investor)

What about the sound test? Do the fake silver rounds have that same resonating sound when you plink them down on a hard surface?

Right! Forgot the ping test and I'm told is the most reliable indicator of verification. Your question is interesting. I'm waiting for the answer from someone here who might know

When I was young and could still hear . . . . . .

oh give me a big silver dollar to throw down on the bar with a bang. A dollar all wrinkled and creased wil do in the east, here in the west we want our money to CLANG! . . . . . . yes it has a distinctive ring.

Does a 1 oz silver round have the same ring as a silver eagle?

It has been a long time since I have been able to hear the ring of a silver coin. I would venture to say yes if both are 1 ounce of .999 fine silver.

Does a 1 oz silver round have the same ring as a silver eagle?Yes, because an SAE is virtually pure silver (99.93%).

Stick to ATB pucks. They are tough to fake.

madfranks
14th July 2016, 03:19 AM
why?

Their unusual shape and high relief means wannabe fakers have to build an entire rig just to fake them.

It's also a real technical challenge to put the text on the rim. Originally the US Mint couldn't do it successfully and had to buy a special machine from Germany.
