A fight over a pair of new Nike Air Jordan 2 Retro "Wing It" shoes erupted in gunfire at a suburban Minneapolis Foot Locker, wounding two people during the Saturday morning sale.

The shoes — worth about $200 — went on sale Saturday, sparking multiple disturbances throughout Minneapolis and Madison as people hoping to score a pair of Michael Jordan’s new line of sneakers found there wasn’t enough to go around.

In Madison, a scuffle broke out among a crowd of 60 customers after learning Finish Line Footwear had only 10 pairs. Meanwhile in Brooklyn Center, cops were already at the strip mall when a melee inside the store spilled out into the parking lot.

“It was absolutely crazy,” witness Latrissa Favorite told WCCO-TV after the 10 a.m. shooting. “I heard police screaming ‘Get down, get down.’”

Shoppers darted for cover as witnesses outside Foot Locker heard least six shots ring out. Those bullets struck two victims. Both of those injured are expected to survive, authorities said.

“It makes you sad for the people and the mentality and mind frame that we have, that we have to kill somebody. That nobody’s life is valued anymore,” Favorite added.

MADISON, Wis. -

Dozens of West Towne mallgoers interested in a new shoe caused a scuffle as the waited outside a sports store before open Saturday, police said.

Madison police said an estimated 60 people were outside Finish Line footwear in the mall at 9:50 a.m. waiting for the shop to open for the release of a new line of Air Jordan sneakers.

Police responded to a report of a disturbance from mall security personnel, who told police the group gathered outside the shoe storefront were pushing and shoving, causing safety concerns, according to a news release.

Police said the Finish Line had 10 pairs of the new shoe, "which did not sit well with the crowd," according to the report.

A police spokesman said officers stayed at the store as customers were let in one at a time until the 10 in-demand sneakers were sold out. Officers left after the crowd thinned out and order seemed to be restored at the shopping center.

A little pink sneaker created a big ruckus this morning at Eastland Center mall in Harper Woods.

At 8 a.m., when the doors opened at the Kids Foot Locker for the highly anticipated release of the Girls' Air Jordan 12 Retro Vivid Pink shoe, crowds rushed the gate, broke a lock, shoved and hollered. Police immediately shut the mall down.

At 10 a.m., the store tried to open again and the same thing happened, according to William McClure, the general manager at Eastland Center.

"Both times, it was shut down by the police for public safety ... all over a tennis shoe," McClure said. "It's frustrating. It got unruly, the police shut it down."

Nobody was hurt. But things got so chaotic that Kids Foot Locker agreed not to sell the Air Jordan 12 Retro shoe and posted a sign outside its door.

So the eager crowd went around the corner to Champs, which was also offering the highly-coveted shoe, which sells for $79.99 for older girls, $59.99 for preschoolers, and $49.99 for toddlers. To avoid an incident, the store kept it's gate closed for hours and handed out raffle tickets to people just to get inside the store. At 12:30 p.m. a security guard shouted "if you have a ticket, we are sold out."

Customers groaned, but still hung around -- hoping that perhaps a pair of sneakers might be found on a back shelf somewhere.

Nearby stores, such as Kay Jewelers, chose not to open today to avoid the chaos.

"We tried to do the best we can," McClure said.

"This is ridiculous," grumbled a mall employee whose store was blocked by the line outside Champs.

Erica Bailey, 39, of Detroit, was one of the few lucky buyers who was able to buy the Jordan Retro 12 shoe today at Eastland. She had been at the mall since midnight, waiting for Kids Foot Locker to open at 8 a.m. When the store shut its doors after the crowd got unruly, Bailey went around the corner to Champs, and waited in line until just after noon. By 12:30 p.m., she had her pink and white tennis shoes.

"I just got my shoe!" Bailey said, flashing a big smile. "I've been here since 12:30 in the morning, all night long I stood outside the door."

Bailey was upset at the unruly customers who made for a longer day than necessary, she said. But it was worth it.

"They're for my granddaughter!" she said, smiling.

Omaha police helped Westroads Mall security Saturday morning with crowd control as shoe stores opened early for the release of the new Air Jordan basketball shoes.

Police got to Westroads at 5:19 a.m. as customers began arriving before the mall opened at 6 and the Finish Line shoe store opened at 7.

Police asked those early birds to leave.

After 6 a.m., more than 100 people waited for the chance to buy the new shoes, police said. Because of crowd size and other factors, police shut down the event at 7:30.

Do we even bother to play the game of "guess the race"? Or is it pretty much already a foregone conclusion of who fought and shot people over stupid shoes?

Only 10 pairs allotted per store? Sounds intentional.

special bball shoes in the ghetto culture are an investment vehicle. often the retail buyers flip the shoes, multiplying their money. know a black guy at work that spent considerable energy trying to figure out a way to buy them in bulk at the retail price. of course he failed.
