Think of me next time you drink a beer........ :)
======================================

Half Moon Bay Brewing created an IPA with gray water from toilets and showers. The water, of course, is treated using NASA’s system that allows astronauts, such as recently-returned Scott Kelly, to brew coffee with their sweat and urine.

The beer isn’t for mass sale yet, according to the Guardian, just as Oregon’s experiments at turning wastewater to beer haven’t quite earned the right to store shelves yet.

The Guardian’s Kristine Wong reported how, while most breweries are trying to get their water:beer ratio down to three gallons of water for every gallon of beer produced, not all are interested in turning “gray water” into beer. Except for Half Moon Bay Brewing:

Last October the brewery unveiled a version of its regular Mavericks Tunnel Vision IPA made with recycled water after a blind taste test at an urban sustainability conference in the Bay Area.

Made using the same Nasa water recycling technology as astronaut Scott Kelly used during his year long stint on the International Space Station, the tasting panel couldn’t detect which of the two pints was made with recycled water.

“This is the product [where] people think that water is the most important ingredient,” said Mendonca. “So if I can demonstrate to people that not only is [greywater beer] good, but it’s great, then why wouldn’t you use that water for everything else?”

In medieval Europe people only drank beer, because water from the shallow wells at the time was frequently contaminated with fecal matter, and was considered dangerous. Using it to ferment beer however was safe as the fermentation eliminated the dangerous bacteria.

This is all you need to know not to drink this stuff. NASA has no such system.

And why is another brewery going down the same path that Coors and Wieser have been doing for years? Making pisswater.

I recall hearing several years ago of a west Texas town that was recycling its sewage water.

Water is said to contain disease markers. That is the premise of the Ellis water machine (John Ellis). Distill water 50-60 times in the presence of ultraviolet to come up with what he calls living water. Eliminates the disease markers. I also like the idea of drinking mineral water that is naturally carbonated. It has been below ground so long to arrive at such a condition that it will carry nothing bad with it (except possibly toxic minerals).

Ponce- I know this sounded like Cuban beer and got you excited, but it is nice to follow some simple courtesies in posting.

1. What is the source?
2. Who is Mendonca? Putting a blind name in a story means nothing.

In this town they already are, or are about to start pumping treated sewage water back into the aquifers that are under the plains here. Pristine water aquifers untouched for aeons, pumped full of waste water. Granted it is "treated" but I don't know what that means. I think it's basic solid from liquid and maybe some neutralizers of some sort. Perhaps the sands will filter it more effectively but I see that it is going to build up over time and the result will be no potable water.

Of course a few companies have been sucking the aquifers dry and the government can't meter them because they are incompetent. Thats actually the excuse they use now. No pretending. Sorry, we incompetent. again.
