With all the hype and noise surround the Donald Trump phenomenon; I kind of forgot that GOP candidate John Kasich was a big supporter of the Clinton-era assault weapons ban. The then US Senator Kasich was one of 38 Republicans to vote for the 1994 AWB. As if that wasn’t bad enough, a new letter has surfaced from none other than Bad Bill Clinton thanking Kasich for helping to sell out our 2nd Amendment rights.
The Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act (AKA The Federal Assault Weapons Ban) was a subsection of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. It was authored by gun-hater Dianne Feinstein and banned scary-looking semi-automatic weapons and normal capacity magazines. Bill Clinton signed it into law in 1994 and it thankfully expired 10 years later.
Much like Bill Clinton’s past comes up to haunt his wife Hillary’s presidential campaign; he’s even doing it to a Republican. A recently unearthed letter (http://www.westernjournalism.com/a-letter-bill-clinton-sent-a-gop-candidate-not-trump-was-just-unearthed-and-it-has-everyone-talking/) from Clinton to Kasich tells you all you need to about the GOP hopeful’s stance on our gun rights:
Thank you very much for your support of H.R. 4296, the assault weapons ban. These weapons have contributed to violent crime and traumatized our nation’s communities for too long. By your vote today you have taken the first step towards getting assault weapons off the streets and out of the hands of criminals. I applaud the bipartisan nature with which our victory was achieved and commend you for your courageous vote.
After Clinton’s signature, he included a handwritten note to Kasich:
I enjoyed our visit last night.
Hey, that’s not bad. Jaunita Broaddrick, Paula Jones, Kathleen Willey, and Monica Lewinski never got a nice note like that from Bill. I’m kind of intrigued as to what Clinton and Kasich did that particular night. I wonder if it involved a cigar.
The Federal Assault Weapons Ban was not only unconstitutional, but also very unpopular. Its passage is largely credited for flipping control of the House of Representatives from democrats to Republicans. Many democrats lost their seats for supporting this piece of crap. Somehow Kasich managed to escape this backlash, getting reelected 3 times after taking a whiz on the Bill of Rights in 1994.
Not that John Kasich had a snowball’s chance in hell of becoming the GOP nominee, but this should be his kiss of death. Banning assault weapons and being “besties” with the Clintons are not attractive things for a Republican’s résumé. Maybe he should jump parties because the democratic field is a brain damaged grandma and a socialist pervert. He might do a lot better on the liberal side.
