LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Senate approved a $720 million restructuring plan Tuesday that would divide Detroit’s ailing school district in two, creating a new district for students to attend while keeping the current one intact to retire a massive operating debt over a decade.

If $72 million a year is “available to DPS, then why isn’t it available for others?” said Sen. Patrick Colbeck, R-Canton

so basically they are going to step sideways into a new operating entity and default the old one. Wonder who the bond holders are? What assets go into the new entity? Any of the old assets or do they start from scratch?

I'm guessing a whole lot of bond holders are going to get a shipload of free city/municipal land. What they should get is stiffed but I've noticed, certain lenders never take losses. Even when their practices are fraud.

Street art?

A quick fix for unemployment would be to hand out a few fuelled up bulldozers and just bulldoze the empty buildings. A clear empty paddock would be better than a decrepit building.

Maybe you don't even need to hire anyone. Just leave the bulldozers laying around with keys and fuel in them. Leave people up to their own deivces.

Detroit should be destroyed, demolished, DETROITED, the only thing remaining of it should be the past tense verb detroited...

I think some single thing should be left as a monument. A sole object in a wasteland of lead and asbestos. An old water tower or something. or maybe some of that art cheka mentions. perhaps something avant garde. I'm thinking of something but can't go there on a family oriented forum like this.

I am putting in a gym floor in Detroit. We'll be done installing tomorrow. Take another week to get it sanded, gamelined and finished. I think we have more jobs coming up there in summer. It has gotten bad; not that it wasn't bad enough years ago. Some parts of the city are nice and well taken care of (Boston Edison District, Indian Village, The University area). If you have enough money, you can live in a nice neighborhood. I will be glad to be out of the neighborhood we are working in. Dangerous.

I spent many days in my youth at the DIA. Used to hitchhike there if I couldn't get someone to go with me. Last time I was there, about 15 years ago, it was not the same. Much of the old stuff was gone.

I used to work in Detroit as a bricklayer in the 80's. You haven't had fun until you worked in the W. Grand Blvd and Rosa Parks area. Constant looking over your shoulder and "situationally aware".

I used to work in Detroit as a bricklayer in the 80's. Maybe one of your structures will remain as an interesting formation then. Let's call it The Steyr-Glass formation if so... Do you have any specific co-ordinates for any of your work? It could be difficult to identify it with a street address as things get fluid.
