Officers shot the suspect when he produced a gun while passing through the metal detector. A female visitor was hit by shrapnel.

The suspect has been identified by ABC News as Larry Dawson, of Tennessee, who was arrested in the US Capitol for interrupting a House session in October to shout 'I am a prophet of God'.

He has been taken to hospital where he is undergoing surgery, Capitol police spokesman Matthew Verderosa confirmed.

There was confusion as the shooting came soon after a scheduled active shooter drill, which staff had been notified about via email.

Police said the man, who was previously known to officers, set off a metal detector before pulling a weapon from his clothing about 2:30 p.m. At least one officer fired, striking the suspect. No officers were injured, but an adult female bystander suffered minor wounds when she was hit by flying shrapnel.
“It has not been determined how many officers fired their weapons,” Capitol Chief Matthew Verderosa told reporters.

So basically the guy had a gun on him, he walked through the metal detector and it started beeping. He began removing the gun and cops started shooting at him, hitting a woman with shrapnel from shots that hit nearby objects. Sounds like an accurate headline would be Cops panic after seeing gun and injure multiple people....innocent bystander hit
