I found this interesting YouTuber how walks through/tours malls that are dead/dying. It's interesting watching how retail is decaying/disappearing entirely.

Recent video from a few days ago:

FOREST FAIR VILLAGE - Cincinnati, OH

CENTURY III MALL - West Mifflin, Pennsylvania

Most malls attract Mr Dindu Nuffin and his large posse, so who wants to go there.

Once one gets Amazon Prime they can liberate themselves from going shopping.

Yeah that's what I did. Amazon Prime means anything I buy comes in 2 days, free shipping, no taxes, and it costs cheaper usually.

I pretty much only go out to shop for groceries, and firearms/hunting related stuff.

If I am not in a rush I choose the slow shipping option with a dollar credit to pump up my tunes collection.

I haven't been to a mall in 15 years. Never did like them. Suits me if they die.

Seems strange they woudl leave them open with no one inside.

And he said the Forest Fair place never took off at all? That sounded like it never filled with traders or something.

Last time at a mall was before I left Michigan. Mall was closed but 2 stores were open, Sears and one other I can remember. Both on opposite sides of the mall so the corridor was open. Everything closed, at the end we saw a bunch of plants dying and went back to the guard and he said take them. Had to clear it with the cops outside and we had an entire landscape design for free. Other than that the mall was obviously dead.

IIRC, the family of Thomas Friedman's wife invented the mall concept.

the shopping mall is just an enclosed version of the UK High Street. I think they used to be called strip malls in the US?

Kinda sortof, these are totally enclosed. Strip malls are a bunch of store fronts in a line or strip... IE strip malls.

yes, thats what I mean. A MALL is just a street that cars are banned from. There are outside Malls. I'm sure there would be some in most US Cities. New Orleans would surely have a car free mall.

so looking at the high street, which may or may not allow cars. All you do is throw one big roof over the street/mall, all the stores and your done. Our CBD has several street Malls where cars are banned (except delivery/service vehicles). Obviously we have the same type of indoor malls as US. It's clear the design is the same here as there. You would not be able to tell the difference.

One of the bigger malls here was originally 3 different shopping facilities. Upmarket dept store, a Kmart and a Target were the anchors in each. All seperate. I remember as a kid walking between the different buildings. Then they just built a big building over the top of all of them. Filled it with marble look floors, brass railings, escalators and it looks just like any other mall.

One of the nicest open malls I visited was the Stroll in Copenhagen.

In The Phil you can get groceries, vitamins, tooth care (cleaning cavity fixes) and everything you can imagine at a mall. Facelifts... my mind is slow but it was a trip to say the least. What they used at the dental centers is not used in the US yet, far superior.

Dick Smith was going to fail unfortunately. Prime example of stripping a business.

The downfall took a while. Originally DS was our version of Radio Shack. Then it was sold and became a blister pack retailer. Nothing for the electronics enthusiast with a soldering iron. That was the end of it. Basically it turned into a Circuit City. Then a consortium or investment fund bought them and stripped the cash flows.

Most malls hide their vacancies, somestimes behind coming soon placards. I've seen some large empty spaces appearing now. Anchors are also carrying less merch on the floors.
