A couple of Aussies got shot there overnight. Been in the area for some kind of university games. Finished the games and went out to party. Taxi'd to the West Bank. Both shot.

Just business as usual or silly boys?

Two Curtin Uni students shot in New Orleans

Two WA School of Mines students are in a stable condition after sustaining gunshot wounds in the US, just days after celebrating victory at the Intercollegiate Mining Games in Montana.

The unnamed male students from the Kalgoorlie-based WASM Wombats had finished the games and headed for a private holiday to New Orleans, known for its round-the-clock nightlife and mardi gras party scene.

A Curtin University spokeswoman said this afternoon the families of both students had been contacted and were arranging travel to the US after the school became aware of the “distressing situation” early yesterday.

WASM director Sam Spearing was also last night flying to New Orleans. “The university is providing support and assistance to the injured students and their families,” the Curtin spokeswoman said. “Support is also being provided to the others in the group who were not in the vicinity of the shooting and are unharmed.”

The New Orleans Advocate reported that young Australian tourists, aged 21 and 23, were shot early on Tuesday morning after venturing to the West Bank of suburban New Orleans.
According to the report, the men took a taxi to L.B. Landry Avenue and Shepard Street at about 4.15am, New Orleans police said in a preliminary offense log.

At some point, both men sustained gunshot wounds.

My guess (having lived in Algiers): You might want to consider travel after 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. to be hazardous. By the way, this is true most places. Zombies tend to come out with the moon and if they detect the living tend to go berzerk.

absolutely I agree after the witching hour you're taking a bigger chance. Curious about that part of that city and what it is like. Club districts are the usual danger but plenty of people about. Then are are areas you wouldn't go in the day, let alone the night. Places like that everywhere, even small cities like here. But if you don't know the city you could end up where you don't want to be without realising.

These kids are going to have problems getting home now. What kind of medical bill would they be facing? $100K?

Housing projects, bad part of town. Quarter across river. I'd avoid in daylight let alone 4am.

Hard to say what the area is like now. I used to park about 3 blocks from the ferry terminal in Algiers, take the ferry to the French Quarter, walk about 6 blocks to the Customs House and work there for the day. But that was the mid 70s. Always had to field half a dozen pan handlers both ways but never really felt unsafe. A guy I worked with just took his bike to and from the ferry and even to the Customs House.

But then times change.

At that time downtown parking was five bux a day ... which was quite a chunk of change. I expect it is much worse now.

As suspected, the boys were trying to buy some drugs.
