Apparel retailer Gap Inc. (GPS) has apologized for an ad for the company's clothing line that was criticized as being racially insensitive.
The ad featured four young girls, who are members of the Le Petit Cirque Group, a traveling circus company that is comprised of performers aged 5 to 14.
In the photo for the ad, an older white Caucasian girl is seen resting her elbow on the head of a younger African-American girl, while two other white girls hold poses.
Gap had tweeted the photo of the ad on April 2 with the caption, "Meet the kids who are proving that girls can do anything."
However, many people noted on social media that the black girl was used as a prop, or an armrest, and criticized the "passive racism."
"While all of the girls are adorable, and indeed, all of them should grow up to be and do anything, it becomes problematic when the black child is positioned to be a white child's prop," Kirsten West Savali of The Root said.
Following a backlash on social media, Gap issued an apology and replaced the image with another photo taken from the same photo shoot.
"As a brand with a proud 46-year history of championing diversity and inclusivity, we appreciate the conversation that has taken place and are sorry to anyone we've offended," a spokeswoman for Gap said.
