A San Antonio school police officer has been put on paid administrative leave after a video of him slamming a 12-year-old girl onto her face surfaced online (http://nypost.com/2016/04/07/school-cop-allegedly-body-slams-12-year-old-girl/).

The 33-second video shows Officer Joshua Kehm struggling to restrain a student at Rhodes Middle School.

Kehm lifts the girl off the ground and slams her face-first to the ground, appearing to knock her unconscious for a moment.

Kehm then handcuffs the dazed girl before picking her up and walking her away.

The officer responded after two students began arguing outside Rhodes Middle School on March 29, school district spokeswoman Leslie Price said.

“The video is very disturbing,” Price said, adding that the department has launched a formal investigation into the incident. “The officer was placed on leave this morning.”

In August, the ACLU filed a federal lawsuit (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/04/us/aclu-sues-over-handcuffing-of-boy-8-and-girl-9-in-kentucky-school.html) accusing a school police officer in Covington, KY, of shackling two children with ADHD. In March, the Houston Chronicle reported (http://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/Local-school-police-used-force-on-students-6164190.php) that “police officers in eight of the largest Houston-area school districts have used force on students and trespassers at least 1,300 times in the last four years.”
For poor children of color, the mouth of the school-to-prison pipeline is manned by police officers who have in recent decades proliferated in districts nationwide. The mass deployment of schools cops, commonly referred to as “school resource officers,” has been made without careful thought or research. And it has produced horrible outcomes.
“Police officers are being used in school for minor misbehavior,” says Aaron Kupchik, a sociologist at the University of Delaware and an expert on school discipline and police. School police officers are justified in the name of preventing serious incidents like shootings, but often end up bringing a law enforcement approach to routine discipline.
“Why was a police officer there to remove a student who wouldn’t leave a classroom?” Kupchik asks. “Cases like this will happen when you introduce police into school environments.”

In only a month, this is the second disturbing video to emerge of a school cop beating a student. Just last month, the Free Thought Project brought you the story of the Baltimore School cop who was seen beating a student who had done nothing wrong. In fact, recent videos have revealed a myriad of school cops attacking unarmed students. In December, Officer Rigo Valles was cleared of any wrongdoing after grabbing a student by the neck (http://thefreethoughtproject.com/school-cop-acted-policy-choked-body-slammed-14-yo-boy-video/) and slamming him to the floor. In October, Richland County Deputy Ben Fields was fired after students recorded him flipping over a girl’s desk (http://thefreethoughtproject.com/video-cop-violently-attacks-peaceful-high-school-girl-sits-desk/) and dragging her across the floor. Oklahoma City Master Sgt. Hardin still faces wanton endangerment, official misconduct, and assault charges for choking another student unconscious in a separate incident five days later. (CNN)A school police officer who slammed a middle-school student to the ground has been fired.

The incident at Rhodes Middle School in San Antonio late last month was captured on cell phone video.

"We understand that situations can sometimes escalate to the point of requiring a physical response; however, in this situation we believe that the extent of the response was absolutely unwarranted," said San Antonio Independent School District Superintendent Pedro Martinez.

"Additionally, the officer's report was inconsistent with the video and it was also delayed, which is not in accordance with the general operating procedures of the police department. We want to be clear that we will not tolerate this behavior," Martinez said.
In the video, Officer Joshua Kehm is seen lifting the student into the air and throwing her to the ground.

She lies motionless as he handcuffs her. Some students shout; others laugh as she is escorted away.

Gloria Valdez told CNN affiliate WOAI/KABB (http://news4sanantonio.com/news/local/student-body-slammed-by-school-police-officer) that her 12-year-old daughter is the girl shown in the video.
"You could just hear where she hits the ground. And it's nothing but concrete, cement," she said. "She wasn't moving. She was just knocked out. I wanted answers, and nobody could give me answers."

Kehm did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.

This wasn't the first time school police officers have been accused of using excessive force.
Last year, a police officer working at a South Carolina school was fired after video circulated on social media showing him violently removing a student from her desk.

That video sparked widespread outrage and questions about what role police should play in schools. At the time, the officer's attorney defended him, saying his actions were justified.

Last month, the Baltimore school system's top cop and two others officers were placed on administrative leave (http://www.cnn.com/2016/03/02/us/baltimore-slap-video/index.html)after the release of a cell phone video showing one of the officers slapping and kicking a young man. Now the officers are facing assault charges (http://www.cnn.com/2016/03/09/us/baltimore-student-slap-video/index.html) in the case.

Martinez said the San Antonio school district's investigation of the incident will continue and help decide if additional actions should be taken in response to what happened.

"We know that this incident does not define our district police department, which is dedicated to serving and protecting our school community," he said. "We all want to make sure this kind of incident does not occur again, and we will seek to identify areas where improvement may be needed."
