Officials have released the name of a female student found in a creek Tuesday morning on the University of Texas campus.

Haruka Weiser, 18, a first-year Theater and Dance student, has been tentatively identified as the victim, according to university officials.

In a statement, Haruka's parents said she was a dance major preparing to double major in pre-med.

Weiser was recruited from her hometown in Portland, Ore., more than two years ago when she performed at the National High School Dance Festival.

"Trained in ballet, Haruka excelled in all her performance endeavors," Fenves's statement said.

At a Thursday press conference, Austin Police Chief Troy Gay said that on Sunday night, Haruka was seen leaving the campus's drama building. He said that she communicated with her friend, and that authorities believe she was traveling back to her dormitory, but "she never made it to her dormitory that night," Gay said.

Her roommate called the university's police department to report her missing at around 11:30 p.m., Gay said. Police tried to locate her, but they were unable to do so until Tuesday morning, when Gay said, they conducted a more thorough search and found her remains in the Waller Creek area.

Haruka's death was ruled a homicide after an autopsy, Gay said.

Chief Gay said authorities have identified a suspect in the case. Gay described the suspect as a 6-foot-tall male walking a red bicycle, who was seen on surveillance video on the north side of the football stadium.

Harkins encouraged members of the school community, "Please do not walk alone. Walk in groups, especially at night." He reminded school community members about the 150 "blue light" phones and cameras on campus and told people to "make certain we are staying aware of the surroundings we're in" and to not take shortcuts through dark areas.

At the press conference, Fenves said, "The unimaginable brutality against Haruka is an attack against our entire family."

The death of a spirited and promising young dancer in Texas caused ripples of grief Thursday at the small magnet school in Oregon from which she graduated.

The body of 18-year-old Haruka J. Weiser was found Tuesday in a creek in the heart the University of Texas campus, one day after her roommate reported her missing, Austin police said. The Portland woman's death is being investigated as a homicide.

Weiser belonged to Dance West, a student dance troupe that performed with the Oregon Symphony a few times a year, said Julane Stites, the group's director. She was in Austin on a full dance scholarship – the largest ever for a graduate of the magnet school, Stites said.

A dance major? I didn't even know schools taught such things. What could be better in life than studying dance moves for 4 years and exiting with $100k in student loans? I can just see the resume now, when they're applying for work, listing their best dance moves.

Not necessarily ... there are all sorts of scholarships and probably a majority are not taxpayer funded.

However, you do get to pay for an overpriced mansion at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave in Washington D.C. I suppose that is something you might want to complain about.

Believe it or not in this country people are still considered innocent until found guilty. Jumping to conclusions is not a rational action.

Its a drill to determine precisely how many clueless people there are in the world. Or it could be a test designed to detect how effective the system put in place to make people uneducated has worked. Ignorant people believe everything. College professors are among the most ignorant people on the face of the earth but as educators they have received training to be effective in passing their disease to others.

The SIR model works well in this field. The 'S' stands for SUSCEPTIBLE. This would be the number of people in society who are susceptible to believe what they have been told. The 'I' stand for INFECTED. Unfortunately this encompasses a majority of the worlds population who, in the Land of the Walking Dead, are Zombies, completely mind dead. And then the 'R' would be RECOVERED. These are Zombies who through some unknown process are able to survive being infected. A differential equation can be formed for this model to show populations metamorphosis through this process but unfortunately the population of R has been shown to be virtually non-existent except perhaps for those on this forum.

I'm thinking the murder charges are well founded considering that a number of the coed's personal effects were found in his possession and he attempted to burn others.

murder (and rape?)....cops are hiding the details

Mary Wadley said authorities had told her that her grandson, Meechaiel, was caught shoplifting in McKinney, Texas, shortly before he was admitted into an emergency youth homeless shelter Monday in Austin, about 225 miles away.

Police released surveillance video that showed a man they said was a suspect walking a women's bicycle. Firefighters later recognized the man as Criner, whom they had spoken to in connection with a trash fire near the UT campus on Monday. An Austin resident who reported the fire also called police when she saw the surveillance video, Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said Friday.

Criner wasn't arrested for the fire but was instead taken to a Life Works shelter. Police found him there Thursday and took him into custody without incident. His arrest affidavit said his clothing matched that of the man on the surveillance video and that he was in possession of a women's bike, as well as Weiser's duffel bag and some of her other belongings, including her laptop.

The arrest affidavit said Weiser's body had "obvious trauma." An autopsy showed she had been assaulted, but police have refused to release further details about how she died.

The affidavit also said campus surveillance video not made public showed the suspect watching a female thought to be Weiser as she walked in the direction of her dorm with her head down, looking at her cellphone.

As she passed, the affidavit said, the suspect produced "what appeared to be a shiny rigid object" and followed her. The pair dropped from view as they reached the creek bank, though, and the suspect wasn't seen on video again for two-plus hours.

Police have said a crime scene weapon hasn't been recovered, however, and Acevedo wouldn't speculate on motive.

Huh? Are you replying to my posts? Doesn't seem like that. By publishing the name and a photo of the suspect of a crime, the suspect are already condemned and guilty by the majority of the population, so it doesn't matter if the charges later are dropped due to lack of evidence, or the suspect later is declared innocent at a fair trial.

Here is a trial that may have not been fair...

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/meechaiel-criner-accused-killer-haruka-weiser-claimed-troubled-childhood-n553061

Criner was living in an Austin, Texas, shelter before he was arrested Thursday, authorities said. Texas Child Protective Services said he was under their care, but was on "runaway status," an agency official said. Criner checked in with a case manager this week, the agency said. That meeting occurred after he was spotted allegedly setting a fire in which evidence in the killing was found.

Criner said his grandmother became like a second mother to him. "She's a sweet person. She's independent," he said. "My grandmother, she takes care of us. I'm always grateful to her."

"Every day, I feel people think I'm not capable of much," Criner said. "What I want to leave behind is my name — I want them to know who Meechaiel Criner is."

“I thought he was going to kill or somebody was going to kill him. That’s what I thought,” said Mary Wadley, the grandmother and legal guardian of Meechaiel Khalil Criner.

“All I know, CPS [child protective services] was supposed to be having him, cause he wasn’t 18 yet. If you made him mad, he snapped. His temper would snap real fast. Even the school knew about it. Thy tried to work with him too, make sure the kids didn’t bother him,” his grandmother said.

The Department of Family and Protective Services moved Criner to a high school in the Killeen School District.

Several students and faculty members tell KXAN he was a student at Ellison High School in Killeen and he walked out of school around two weeks ago.

Not suggesting the charges are not valid but rather that the determination of guilt or innocence be delayed until evidence can be examined.

A December 2014 issue of Texarkana's Texas High School student newspaper, the Tiger Times, features Criner in a story headlined, "A voice of hope," KSLA reports.
.
......and his "African-like accent,"

http://scallywagandvagabond.com/2016/04/meechaiel-khalil-criner-interview-haruka-weiser-school-newspaper/

‘In elementary school, I would come home crying about every day. It was because of my accent, you see. People couldn’t really understand me.’

The interview goes on to describe Meechaiel Criner’s upcoming Christmas festivities, of home cooking, home decorations, this despite the fact that at the time of Meechaiel Khalil Criner’s arrest, the youth was described as being a homeless youth. Which is to suggest the youth in all likelihood came to recently run away.

So your point is that in your view money still exists? And somehow this money (which is yours) has been diverted to benefit the dance program at the University of Texas? And when I point out that by this generous act you must be a patron of the Arts you decide to take offense?

Details released somewhat.

A week after a deceased woman was found in a creek at the University of Texas at Austin, new details are coming to light.

Based on preliminary evidence and several law enforcement officers in the investigation, Haruka Weiser – a freshman dance major at UT – was said to be a victim of sexual assault and strangulation, the Austin-American Statesman reports.

Criner's mother, an adult entertainer and convicted prostitute who lives in Las Vegas, plans to return to Austin to set the record straight on her son. "The lies got to stop. My son didn't do this," Vivian Criner told the Statesman.

The day after her son was arrested, Criner set up a GoFundMe page seeking $10,000 to help her publish a book on sexual hygiene.
