I say....."Being poor is not knowing how to live with what you have".....

"Being poor is to want more" (no matter how little you have there are others with less than you)........

"Are you middle class?, you have more than the poors, including debts"

Have no debts and you can still retire like a king with only your social security.....I do......

"Live with what you have, and not with what you want".........

."To want and cannot have, is what really makes you poor"....... is all in the mind.

Sorry amigos, sometimes I think to much....

Hi Ponce; good post. Below are a few (well, more than a few) quotes from the agnut archives. Perhaps a few will sink in to incorporate inner understanding and peace. Works for me.

Best wishes,

agnut

"So many people nowadays like to talk about 'white privilege', but no one will speak about the real issue, and that is white intelligence and white competence. That is the criteria by which we received any privilege at all. Dumb whites have done poorly all through history, and always will, like dumb people of any race."
J. Sebastian Bakersfield Jr.

"The world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel." Horace Walpole

Everything the State says is a lie, and everything it has it has stolen - Friedrich Nietzsche

“So you think that money is the root of all evil? [...] Have you ever asked what is the root of money? Money is a tool of exchange, which can't exist unless there are goods produced and men able to produce them. Money is the material shape of the principle that men who wish to deal with one another must deal by trade and give value for value. Money is not the tool of the moochers, who claim your product by tears, or of the looters, who take it from you by force. Money is made possible only by the men who produce. Is this what you consider evil?”― Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged

A slave is one who waits for someone else to free him.
Rosellen Brown

"Gold is the money of kings, silver is the money of gentlemen, barter is the money of peasants but debt is the money of slaves." Norm Franz, Money and Wealth in the New Millenium
"A dollar is a receipt for a claim check on an IOU." - Mike Maloney

1. "Paper is poverty, it is only the ghost of money, and not money itself." --Thomas Jefferson to Edward Carrington, 1788

“The trick is in what one emphasizes. We either make ourselves miserable, or we make ourselves strong. The amount of work is the same." - Carlos Castaneda

"When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men living together in society, they create for themselves in the course of time a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that glorifies it." --Frederick Bastiat, The Law

“Folks are usually about as happy as they make their minds up to be.”

The liberties of a people never were, nor ever will be, secure, when the transactions of their rulers may be concealed from them. - Patrick Henry

Bad men cannot make good citizens. A vitiated state of morals, a corrupted public conscience are incompatible with freedom. - Patrick Henry

The means of defense against foreign danger historically have become the instruments of tyranny at home. - James Madison

"No one in this world, so far as I know, ...has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people." H.L. Mencken

The most successful tyranny is not the one that uses force to assure uniformity but the one that removes the awareness of other possibilities, that makes it seem inconceivable that other ways are viable, that removes the sense that there is an outside.
Allan Bloom; The Closing of the American Mind

Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure... than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat. Theodore Roosevelt

"Better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it."
- Benjamin Franklin

"In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." George Orwell

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently and die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."---- Robert A. Heinlein

Next to excellence is the appreciation of it. Thackeray

He is incapable of a truly good action who finds not a pleasure in contemplating the good actions of others. Lavater

He who establishes his argument by noise and command, shows that his reason is weak. Montaigne

The first duty of a wise advocate is to convince his opponents that he understands their arguments, and sympathizes with their just feelings. Samuel Taylor Coleridge

All great art is the expression of man’s delight in God’s work, not his own. Ruskin

1. Man' s power lies in giving. He must learn to give as Nature gives. Each half of a cycle eternally gives to the other half for re-giving... Man must know the principle of Creation: giving between each interchanging opposite half of each cycle for the purpose of repeating its giving. Each individual must manifest this law. Man will forever war with man until he learns to give his all with the full expectation of equal receiving -- Walter Russell

2. “In individuals, insanity is rare; but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule.” – Friedrich Nietzsche

3. “Sometimes people don’t want to hear the truth because they don’t want their illusions destroyed.” – Friedrich Nietzsche
4.
5. “The real hopeless victims of mental illness are to be found among those who appear to be most normal. Many of them are normal because they are so well adjusted to our mode of existence, because their human voice has been silenced so early in their lives, that they do not even struggle or suffer or develop symptoms as the neurotic does.” They are normal not in what may be called the absolute sense of the word; they are normal only in relation to a profoundly abnormal society. Their perfect adjustment to that abnormal society is a measure of their mental sickness. These millions of abnormally normal people, living without fuss in a society to which, if they were fully human beings, they ought not to be adjusted.” – Aldous Huxley – Brave New World Revisited

6. A lack of discipline, inability to delay gratification, failure to understand basic mathematical concepts, materialistic envy, absence of critical thinking skills, and a delusionary view of the world have left the majority of Americans broke and in debt.

7. “What we now want is closer contact and better understanding between individuals and communities all over the earth, and the elimination of egoism and pride which is always prone to plunge the world into primeval barbarism and strife... Peace can only come as a natural consequence of universal enlightenment...” ― Nikola Tesla

8. Greed isn't keeping what you worked hard for and earned. Greed is demanding something you didn't earn. #KeelyMullen
9.
10. [The owners of this country] don't want people who are smart enough to sit around the kitchen table and figure out how badly they're getting f*cked by a system that threw them overboard 30 f*ckin' years ago. They don't want that. You know what they want? They want obedient workers. People who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paperwork, and just dumb enough to passively accept all of these increasingly sh*ttier jobs with the lower pay…The owners of this country know the truth. It's called the American Dream, because you have to be asleep to believe it. George Carlin

"When law and morality contradict each other, the citizen has the cruel alternative of either losing his moral sense or losing his respect for the law." ~ Frederic Bastiat

We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion:
the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission;
which is the stage of the darkest periods of human history, the stage of rule by brute force. -Ayn Rand

“Control oil and you control nations; control food and you control the people.” Henry Kissinger

“Military men are dumb, stupid animals to be used as pawns for foreign policy.”

The losers in life think they have all the answers. They can’t learn because they’re too busy telling everyone what they know.
Robert T. Kiyosaki ‏

"Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again. -This time more intelligently." Henry Ford

Failure inspires winners but defeats losers
Robert Kiyosaki ‏

Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear to be bright until you hear them speak

"The further a society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those who speak it".
~George Orwell

Excellence is to do a common thing in an uncommon way." Booker T. Washington

• The problem with Liberals is that you can explain it to them, but you cannot comprehend it for them.

• If one will live like most won't early on in life, one can live like most cannot the rest of their life.

And my favorite :

"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a little better; whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is the meaning of success. "
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ponce, like you, I found after making huge sums of money just how little it really costs to live, and live good at that. But those whose ambition is fueled by the need to keep up with the Joneses and validate themselves with materialism never make that discovery.

watch the OT hogs at work. they give their life to the man....so they can drive a shiny monster truck...or the black guys, corvettes/bmws....and/or live in a mcmansion.....and then they die early....the job is 12 hrs/day or night ....so sleep deprived is the norm

many die before getting to the retirement carrot in the 401 and pension. lots of divorces (husband never home) -- bitch takes half...and child support kicker

these guys work 84 hours per week for many weeks of the year. they think I AM crazy for sticking with my 42 hrs/week and driving an old truck...living modestly

same group can watch chemtrail hell directly over their heads and snicker when i point it out

Not for materialism but just to get out from under the shadow of the boss man's index finger. I hate taking orders from idiots. I retired on my own investments at age 44. That was 16 years ago.

Setting goals too low is not really good. The reason is that once you reach your chosen goal you have no further goal and have to set new ones.

My goal is to either become emperor of the universe ... or a janitor. I haven't decided yet which one is un-obtainable.

The definition of boat does not include the necessity that it actually float. I have personally visited many lying on the bottom of the ocean and they were all very nice.

Now you are not poor and you have trees falling on your house.

If it doesn't suck then it can't be life.
