Ebonics isn't a new phenomenon you know. This white dude was trying to be nice by writing books in a manner that the few literate negroes could actually understand. I'm sure back then the negroes loved this white dude for making them a book. Today it's a banned book (note the big black "withdrawn" stamp on the first page).

It seems strange you would write a book though, don't you think? Who's gonna read it to them? As you said it needs someone literate in that language and that means some one needs to teach them how to read it. Do they teach a few of them how to read it so's they can teach others and read it. Seems an odd effort to me.

Wouldn't you just put the effort into teaching them regular english pronounciation and literacy. Same effort and hopefully a more useful outcome. I'm thinking misguided intentions maybe?

Negroes today can't read high literature, what makes you think that back then they could, or would even want to? This guy wrote a book at their level, with simple stories they would be interested in reading. Modern education shows us that what truly is a waste of time is trying to teach them proper English so they can attempt to read high literature.

huh? Speaking words does not translate to an ability to read words. They are seperate skills. If you are going to teach a skill, teach the skill as you would anyone else. It would be more productive.

If you gave that to someone who could not read it would do them no good unless they learned paper was flamable. Otherwise, if you are going to the effort, teach them a real language i.e. the one you are speaking so there's benefit there.

It's almost as if this is the genisis of hip hop. No person who has never read anything or never been taught to read, is going to pick this up and be able to read it. Someone is going to have to teach them to read it. I think the book is a joke book. Like white people painting their faces and singing negro songs.

It just seems like a strange thing.

You make good points Glass, but take it for what it is. This book wasn't part of some government curriculum mandate to teach black folks how to read. It's one guy who thought it would be a good idea to make a book of stories that read in the same manner as they talked. No more, no less. I don't know how successful it was, and it is possible (even probable) that any negroes who were interested in learning to read and had the means to learn regular english would have been better served by regular english books than this book. That being said, I'm pretty certain that this book was successful with those negroes who barely learned to read but knew enough that they could read in their language (ebonics) rather than try to read a book with proper english.
