Russian Fighter Jet Flies Within 50 Feet Of US Recon Plane Over Baltic Sea

Submitted by Tyler Durden (http://www.zerohedge.com/users/tyler-durden) on 04/17/2016 15:12 -0400

Just days after the US destroyer Donald Cook had a close "buzzing" with two Russian Su-24 fighters (http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-04-13/aggressive-russian-fighter-jet-flies-few-hundred-yards-us-warship-baltic-sea)which performed several low passes as close as 30 feet away in the Baltic Sea, the US Air Force complained about another close encounter which took place on Thursday.
According to US European Command, during a routine flight by a US EC-135U reconnaissance plane which was flying over international waters (again in the Baltic Sea) a Russian Flanker barrel rolled from the left side of the U.S. RC-135 and went over the top of it to end on the right side of the aircraft.
As CNN details (http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/16/politics/russian-jet-barrel-rolled-us-aircraft/index.html), the Russian jet "performed erratic and aggressive maneuvers" as it "flew within 50 feet of the U.S. aircraft's wing tip", Danny Hernandez, a spokesman for U.S. European Command, said. The Russian Su-27 began the barrel roll from the left side of the U.S. RC-135 and went over the top of it to end on the right side of the aircraft, European Command said.

This is merely the latest in a long series of close encounters between Russian and US airborne forces. Here, once again courtesy of The Aviationist (http://theaviationist.com/2016/04/17/russian-su-27-interceptor-performs-top-gun-stunt-over-u-s-spyplane/), is a brief list of the most recent Russian-US encounters:

On Jan. 25, 2016 a U.S. RC-135 intelligence gathering jet (http://theaviationist.com/2015/09/25/il-20-deployed-to-syria/) was intercepted by a Russian Su-27 Flanker (http://theaviationist.com/2014/10/02/su-27-intercept-swedish-elint-plane/) fighter jet over Black Sea: during the interception, the Su-27 made an aggressive turn that disturbed the controllability of the RC-135.
On Apr. 7, 2015 another Su-27 flew within 20 feet of an RC-135U (http://theaviationist.com/2015/04/13/su-27-aggressively-intercept-rc135/), over the Baltic Sea.
On Apr. 23, 2015 a U.S. Air Force RC-135U Combat Sent performing a routine surveillance mission in international airspace over the Sea of Okhotsk, north of Japan, some 60 miles off eastern Russia was intercepted by a Russian Su-27 Flanker (http://theaviationist.com/2014/05/11/kubinka-diamond-over-crimea/) that crossed the route of the U.S. aircraft putting itself within 100 feet of the Combat Sent.

It's not just the Russians. Chinese pilots have also come close:
In 2014, a Chinese Flanker made a barrel roll (http://foxtrotalpha.jalopnik.com/chinese-su-27-fighter-jet-did-a-barrel-roll-over-a-usn-1625759458) over a U.S. Navy P-8 maritime surveillance plane 135 miles east of Hainan Island, a spot of a far more dangerous close encounter of another U.S. electronic surveillance plane with the Chinese Navy back in 2001.
On Apr. 1, 2001, a U.S. Navy EP-3E (http://theaviationist.com/2012/04/13/ep-3e-derna/) with the VQ-1, flying an ELINT (Electronic Intelligence) mission in international airspace 64 miles southeast of the island of Hainan was intercepted by two PLAN (People’s Liberation Army Navy) J-8 fighters. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hainan_Island_incident)
One of the J-8s piloted by Lt. Cdr. Wang Wei, made two close passes to the EP-3 before colliding with the spyplane on the third pass. As a consequence, the J-8 broke into two pieces and crashed into the sea causing the death of the pilot, whereas the EP-3, severely damaged, performed an unauthorized landing at China’s Lingshui airfield.
The 24 crew members (21 men and three women), that destroyed all (or at least most of ) the sensitive items and data on board the aircraft, were detained by Chinese authorities until Apr. 11.

Russia dismisses US report of Baltic encounter By GPD (http://www.veteranstoday.com/author/admin/) on April 17, 2016
http://www.veteranstoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/afc00-photo.jpgWe are back to the old Cold War tactics of testing borders to collect signal intelligence to prepare jamming options

… from Press TV (http://www.presstv.com/Detail/2016/04/17/461242/US-Russia-Igor-Konashenkov-NATO-Danny-Hernandez-Ukraine/), Moscow
Russia’s military has dismissed a report by the US European Command that a Russian jet made aggressive maneuvers near a US reconnaissance plane over the Baltic Sea.
Igor Konashenkov in a statement on Sunday dismissed the report as “running counter to reality,” noting that Russian air defenses had to scramble the jet after detecting a high-speed unidentified target over the Baltic Sea heading for its borders.
The US reconnaissance plane changed course after making visual contact with the Russian jet, Konashenkov added.
The Russian spokesman stressed that the flight of the Russian warplane was in “strict conformity with international laws … and there were no emergency situations.”
The remarks come after US Defense Department announced Thursday that a Russian SU-27 jet flew dangerously close to the American aircraft, which was flying a routine route in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.
US European Command spokesman Danny Hernandez said that the Su-27 fighter “performed erratic and aggressive maneuvers” by flying within 50 feet of a US RC-135 aircraft.
Hernandez said that the “unsafe and unprofessional actions of a single pilot have the potential to unnecessarily escalate tensions between countries.”
This has been a second incident in the volatile region between the Cold War-era foes in the past week.
Also on Tuesday, two Russian Su-24 bombers reportedly buzzed the Donald Cook, a US guided missile destroyer, in the Baltic Sea. A US military official describing the incident as one of the most aggressive interactions in recent memory.
US Secretary of State John Kerry denounced as dangerous and provocative the military encounter in the Baltic Sea region.
The government of Russian President Vladimir Putin accuses the US-led NATO military alliance of expanding towards Russia’s borders. Moscow has also repeatedly objected to NATO’s military build-up near Russia’s borders.

The developments come as tensions are resurfacing between Russia and NATO as the two sides plan to hold their first formal talks in almost two years.
Russia’s Ambassador to NATO Alexander Grushko has said that the western military alliance is using the crisis in Ukraine as a pretext for an absolutely unjustified buildup in Baltic States.
Grushko said he plans to protest to NATO at the rare talks in Brussels on April 20.
Russia and NATO have been locked in a deepening dispute. The military alliance accuses Russia of backing militias in eastern Ukraine. Moscow denies this and argues that the alliance is using the situation to move closer to its borders.
Relations between Russia and NATO specially soured after Crimea rejoined the Russian Federation following a referendum in March 2014.
The United States and its European allies accuse Moscow of destabilizing Ukraine and have imposed a number of sanctions against Russian and pro-Russia figures. Moscow, however, rejects having a hand in the Ukrainian crisis.

China Says Russia “Humiliated” Arrogant U.S. With ‘Simulated Attack’ on WarshipMouthpiece of Communist Party praises Putin for provocation Paul Joseph Watson (http://www.infowars.com/author/paul-joseph-watson/) - April 14, 2016

U.S. military officials later described (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-russia-simulatedattack-idUSKCN0XA1UW) the maneuvers as some of the most aggressive interactions in recent memory.

However, an editorial in the Global Times (http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/978616.shtml), an official mouthpiece for China’s ruling Communist Party, characterizes the incident as a huge blow to American prestige.“The Russian pilots have demonstrated high professional skills to conduct such extremely dangerous maneuvers,” states the editorial. “The US military, which intends to provoke Russia in the Baltic Sea, was humiliated by its Russian counterpart instead. The US must feel furious.”

The White House said President Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin chatted on the phone today --
but Obama did not bring up Russia's too-close-for-comfort aerial actions near a U.S. ship and a reconnaissance plane.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to write “US Naval destroyer sails dangerously close to the major Russian city of St. Petersburg”?

So? don't go were they are at....I don't see them here in OUR area.

I agree, but most Americans are too dumb and/or too self-absorbed to see that. There was much paranoia about the Cuban missile crisis, but most do not realize that the USSR/Cuba deployed nukes as a result of an American deployment of nukes in Turkey.
