In China, many people have commented that after staying in certain hotels they experience itchy skin. However, they often consider the uncomfortable itches as a common symptom when acclimatizing to a new place.
But, this is not the case — the real problem lies in the linens of the hotel.

Very few of express inns in China have their own laundry rooms to wash the bedding sets or towels due to their cost-conscious nature. Instead, they outsource the laundry and cleaning to a third party, for example, laundry workshops in the rural area of Beijing.
Recently, journalists from Beijing News (http://weibo.com/ttarticle/p/show?id=2309403965529718135029) secretly visited a few small workshops where tons of linen are sent from different hotels around Beijing. To their astonishment the journalists saw the dirty sheets with stains like blood or vomit mixed together with other sheets, and washed with caustic soda.
http://www.visiontimes.com/uploads/2016/04/Dirty-hotle-bed-sheets-set-alkaline-3.jpgThe workers emptying the linen in a workshop. (Image: Beijing News)

The laundry workers told the journalists, who worked as undercover employees in the workshop, that the key to getting the sheets “clean and white” is the caustic soda. They said: “No matter how dirty the sheet is, caustic soda can make it clean like it’s brand new.” About 90 pounds of caustic soda is used every day in this workshop.
http://www.visiontimes.com/uploads/2016/04/Dirty-hotle-bed-sheets-set-alkaline-2.jpgA bag of caustic soda next to a laundry machine. (Image: Beijing News)

Caustic soda has a strong base, is highly corrosive, and can be easily purchased online in China. It’s widely used in paper making, aluminum smelting, and soap manufacturing. Now the laundry workshops have given it one more use — whitening hotel bedding and towels.
After the caustic-soda treatment, the linens and towels pH value greatly increases, indicating a change of their properties from “neutral” to “very basic,” and suggesting potential corrosive effects on the skin.
http://www.visiontimes.com/uploads/2016/04/Dirty-hotle-bed-sheets-set-alkaline-4.jpgJournalists testing the pH value of a hotel towel, which is as high as 9.09, indicating the towel is strong alkaline and corrosive to the human skin. (Image: Beijing News)

As the test result above shows, the pH value of the towel from the 7 Days Inn in Beijing reached nearly as high as 10, which has far exceeded the limit of 6.5 to 7 that the human body can withstand. The strong alkaline can damage the skin’s immune barrier, and cause skin diseases.
Those laundry workshops were found to have long customer lists in which both express inns and four-star hotels are included. It is not easy to survive in China

you'd be better off taking a sleeping bag with a hood. You can get small packing hot weather sleeping bags. Or a disposable coverall that a painter might use in a spray booth. hotels are usually going to be aircond so over heating shouldn't be a factor.

a couple trips ago I spent some time in a hotel that was ok with local working girls staying with patrons. Caustic sheets would be the last thing I'd be worried about. Word of warning. No one looks under the beds - housemaids etc. You shouldn't either.

Tissue digestion In a similar fashion, sodium hydroxide is used to digest tissues, as in a process that was used with farm animals at one time. This process involved placing a carcass into a sealed chamber, then adding a mixture of sodium hydroxide and water (which breaks the chemical bonds that keep the flesh intact). This eventually turns the body into a liquid with coffee-like appearance,[19] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_hydroxide#cite_note-Ayres-19)[20] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_hydroxide#cite_note-carcassdisposal-20) and the only solid that remains are bone hulls, which could be crushed between one's fingertips.[21] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_hydroxide#cite_note-Roach-21) Sodium hydroxide is frequently used in the process of decomposing roadkill (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roadkill) dumped in landfills by animal disposal contractors.[20] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_hydroxide#cite_note-carcassdisposal-20) Due to its low cost and availability, it has been used to dispose of corpses by criminals. Italian (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italy) serial killer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_killer) Leonarda Cianciulli (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonarda_Cianciulli) used this chemical to turn dead bodies into soap.[22] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_hydroxide#cite_note-22) In Mexico, a man who worked for drug cartels admitted disposing of over 300 bodies with it.[23] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_hydroxide#cite_note-23) Sodium hydroxide is a dangerous chemical due to its ability to hydrolyze protein. If a dilute solution is spilled on the skin, burns may result if the area is not washed thoroughly and for several minutes with running water. Splashes in the eye can be more serious and can lead to blindness.[24] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_hydroxide#cite_note-24) This danger is often overlooked.

When working with concrete if you aren't careful you can and will get caustic burns should any get on your skin.

Here's a fun fact. Hotels in the US change the bed sheets each day, but they don't change out the comforter, or bed spread. They just make the bed with new sheets and call it good. Who knows how many different bodily fluids are on those comforters. I take that off the bed and stuff it into the closet.

2 Tablespoons of eucalyptus oil in a full wash does the same thing.

I do it all the time with my sheets. It gives you a new silky feel that smells great too.

I've been to various parts of China on business and stayed in several different hotels and never had a problem. Course I didn't stay in economy hotels since the price of even 5 star hotels is fairly reasonable. I'd be just as worried about bed bugs etc. staying in an economy hotel in the US...

What does he love about it?
Jim Rogers always raves about it but he has a vested interest in saying so. It would be great to hear from someone without any vested interest

Well last I heard he was making 50$ US an hour making some sort of digital watch that looks and works exactly like one with hour and minute hands. It also receives messages.

He is also single so I suspect he may have an overwhelming choice of Chinese babes , of course it may only be my twisted mind at work.

He used to go there from OZ with a company ,he lost that job and moved to China and now has contacts to do business ect for components ect with other businesses in OZ.

He lives 8 stories up.

Ive been meaning to visit him.

China in a lot of ways is the land of opportunity.

China is a pretty free country with few rules. You can ride a motorcycle with no helmet (heck you can carry your whole family on one). I took my 16 year old there last year, ordered a beer in the hotel lounge, and the young and pretty server asked if he wanted one. No id required... Not only that but she gave my son her number in case he wanted to meet her after work.

Plus it is a pretty safe country. I never felt in danger regardless of where I went. As a young western man there could be many opportunities there...
