Wendy’s to Lay Off All Cashiers, Autonomize 6,000+ Locations to Fight Wage IncreasesSource: Anon HQ (http://anonhq.com/wendys-autonomize-6000-locations-fight-wage-increases/)

The fight for $15 per hour. The unintended consequences of raising the minimum wage are already beginning to take hold on several industries nationwide. In one of the most public moves combating wage increases to date, Wendy’s fast food chain has announced plans to automatize cashiers at over 6,000 facilities nationwide by the end of 2016.
Though Wendy’s made their decision official this past Thursday (http://www.investors.com/politics/policy/wendys-serves-up-kiosks-as-wages-rise-hits-fast-food-group/), Company CEO Emil Brolick hinted last August (http://www.forbes.com/sites/timworstall/2015/08/11/wendys-explains-what-really-happens-with-a-minimum-wage-rise-job-losses/#7d68e6b98dc3) that the franchise might do just this. At the time Wendy’s was debating laying off employees in favor autonomization, or increasing the prices on their menu. As Emil Brolick stated “our franchisees will likely look at the opportunity to reduce overall staff, look at the opportunity to certainly reduce hours and any other cost reduction opportunities, not just price. You know there are some people out there who naively say that these wages can simply be passed along in terms of price increases. I don’t think that the average franchisee believes that.”
Wendy’s CFO Todd Penegor went on to add “We continue to look at initiatives and how we work to offset any impacts of future wage inflation through technology initiatives, whether that’s customer self-order kiosks, whether that’s automating more in the back of the house in the restaurant. You’ll see a lot more coming on that front later this year from us.”
Indeed they will. In an interview with Business Daily (http://www.investors.com/politics/policy/wendys-serves-up-kiosks-as-wages-rise-hits-fast-food-group/), Wendy’s representatives noted how the company’s 258 restaurants in California were struggling to keep up with the $10/hr wage demands, and similarly, the company’s 200+ franchises in New York simply cant keep up with the cost of wage inflation. Last month these two states voted to impose a minimum wage increase to 15$ statewide (http://anonhq.com/minimum-wage-debate/) – going into effect within the next several years.
This legislation, along with the growing support for “the fight for $15$” nationwide, was the deciding factor. Wendy’s will now faze out cashiers at every location nationwide, in favor of self serve kiosks. The company also claims they will move forward with mobile phone ordering and mobile payment systems, which the company has been testing for the last several years.
Before you go ahead and call Wendy’s just another evil corporation, here are some real world statistics to consider – imagine you were the owners of Wendy’s. Wendy’s makes a profit of $120 million dollars per year (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendy's) and employs 37,000 employees (https://www.wendys.com/en-us/about-wendys/investor-faqs). This means if each employee worked 2,000 hours per year (38 hours a week), with a 1.62$ increase for each employee, the company would loose all $120 million in profits and break even. Again, this is with a small wage increase of 1.62$, never mind all the way up to 15$. At 15$/hr the company would bankrupt themselves. This is the problem of raising a minimum wage and a perfect example of the harm wage increases can cause to the work force, corporations and the economy all at the same time.

I don't think there is enough information in that article to determine what the costs to Wendys would be.

Wendys, the company owns 22% of the stores, yet the article is written as if they own all of them. If they made $120 million net on a 22% share of the stores then the impact to their bottom line would be in the order of a 30% reduction to their net not a 100% reduction.

Also they did not make $120 million in 2015/16. They made a profit of $85.9 million. This is an increase over the previous year of $62.6 million ($23,3mil net). That is based on a YoY increase in sales of 4.8%.

So unclear we are comparing apples with apples, donuts with donuts, shakes with shakes. Do the numbers include only the Franchise company and the 22% of stores it controls or does it include the franchise company and 100% of the stores, franchisee and franchisor controlled?

the reference I used: http://www.marketwatch.com/story/wendys-profit-revenue-beats-expectations-2016-02-09

That link says Revenue slipped due to 363 fewer franchisor operated stores, so I am going to say the OP article is not including the franchisee store profitability in those numbers BUT is claiming 100% of the projected employee wage costs against the profit of only Wendys the franchisor stores .

Robots it would appear will eliminate millions of minimum wage jobs that heretofore emplyed the young and not-so-ambitious who lived at home and/or just got by. With these jobs gone, society is going to have to deal with millions of young with no jobs and no prospects, worthless degrees, unpayable school loans and nothing productive to do. This will not turn out well.

We're dealing with that now!!!yeah, i know. I feel sorry for the young. I'm helping my son start his own business - I am grateful to be in a position to provide such support and guidance.

The worrying forecast could threaten jobs at the fast food franchise, a former CEO of the company warns

A former McDonald's CEO warned that robots will take over staff jobs at the fast food empire - because it's cheaper than employing humans.

Ed Rensi has said that buying highly skilled robotics is a cheaper alternative than employing people on minimum wage to work in the company's worldwide restaurants.

He warned that huge job losses are imminent, and commented that it would be 'common sense' to replace humans in the workplace.

This comes as a study into the future of human employment has predicted a surge in machine-led work such as robotic counsellors, body part makers and virtual lawyers.

http://img.4plebs.org/boards/pol/image/1464/18/1464183064901.jpg

The worrying research, by professor of management practice at London Business School, Lynda Gratton, and futurologist David A. Smith, suggests that humans will be replaced because robots are able to produce better results.

Prof Gratton said: "Studies have suggested that a third of jobs in Europe will be replaced by technology over the next two decades."

If the recent comments are to be believed, McDonald's staff could face the same fate.

Former CEO Ed Rensi said: "I was at the National Restaurant Show yesterday and if you look at the robotic devices that are coming into the restaurant industry.

"It’s cheaper to buy a $35,000 (£24,000) robotic arm tan it is to hire an employee who’s inefficient making $15 (£10.20) an hour bagging French fries.

"It's nonsense and it’s very destructive and it’s inflationary and it’s going to cause a job loss across this country like you’re not going to believe."

He told FOX: "It’s not just going to be in the fast food business. Franchising is the best business model in the United States.

"It’s dependent on people that have low job skills that have to grow. Well if you can’t get people a reasonable wage, you’re going to get machines to do the work.

"It’s just common sense. It’s going to happen whether you like it or not. And the more you push this it’s going to happen faster."

Prof Gratton added: "As middle-skilled roles disappear, workers may find that the 'rung' above them no longer exists, and that the career ladder may begin to look more like a career web.

"The ultimate implication is that workers cannot now expect to gain seniority by moving 'up', but rather moving sideways by gaining additional complex skills."

Fmr. McDonald’s USA CEO: $35K Robots Cheaper Than Hiring at $15 Per Hour – says we’ll see job losses like we’ve never seen By Editor (http://www.againstcronycapitalism.org/author/editor/) on May 25, 2016

And the robots will only get better and cheaper.
Again we ask how it is that the SEIU and the other unions agitatiting for a radically higher minimum wage don’t understand that they are putting people out of work?
My bet actually is that they do understand that there will be big job losses but that they figure in the short term in states like California and New York there is hay to be made and perhaps new union dues to extract.

MIT (and probably a bunch of others) will figure out how to automate the back end also.

One upside might be: food quality will increase.

not all of the vid is about that, but some interesting comment... the superfluous class will be skinned alive by the system, robot will cause suicides, etc...
