A man accused of holding two people hostage and beating them during a robbery was sentenced Wednesday to 40 years in prison.
Miguel Angel Saenz, 33, pleaded guilty to two charges of aggravated robbery for holding a former employer, who had fired him, and another man hostage in a Dickinson home for about two and a half hours, according to the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office.
On Sept. 29, 2014, Saenz and an unidentified accomplice entered the home of his former boss with guns, officials said. Saenz and his accomplice bound the former employer and another man with duct tape, officials said. Over the next couple of hours, Saenz brutally beat his former boss, demanding the combination to his home safe and threatening to kill both men, officials said.
At one point, the former employer was able to break free from his bindings, but Saenz and his accomplice hogtied him with the cord from a vacuum cleaner, officials said.
Saenz’s former employer suffered multiple injuries, including cheekbone fractures, a broken nose, a laceration to his skull, ruptured kidneys and blunt force trauma to multiple areas of the body, officials said.
Saenz and his accomplice left the residence after taking money and jewelry from the victims, officials said. Both victims broke free and went to a neighbor for help, officials said.
Saenz was arrested in Walker County and indicted about two weeks after the incident.
Saenz had two prior felony convictions in Idaho for aggravated battery and trafficking methamphetamine, officials said. He also had been deported, officials said.
He will be eligible for parole after serving 20 years. Upon his release, Saenz could be deported, officials said.
Saenz was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Kacey Launius and Matthew Shawhan in the 405th District Court, Judge Michelle Slaughter presiding. The investigation was conducted by the Dickinson Police Department.
