Orlando Gay Nightclub Shooting: Gunman Dead, 'Mass Casualties'

Reports suggested that more than 25 people have been shot and the gunman could be wearing a bomb.
Police confirmed that the gunman at an Orlando nightclub has been killed Sunday morning after he had carried out a mass shooting and taken dozens of people hostage. The police also confirmed a “mass casualty situation”.

The incident took place in Orlando at the Pulse Club, a gay nightclub in the city. It posted on its Facebook page: "Everyone get out of pulse and keep running". No official details of the incident have yet been given.

However, video footage social media showed wounded people being treated at the scene. Local TV reporter Stewart Moore tweeted he had been told by a source that more than 20 people had been shot. He said the attacker was still inside the nightclub with hostages, and was feared to be wearing a bomb.

Police said on Twitter they had carried out a "controlled explosion" at the club hours after the shooting broke out, but did not say why that was done. They described the scene as a "fluid situation".

Video posted online showed a large number of police and emergency vehicles outside the nightclub. Bomb sniffing dogs were also on the scene, CNN reported.

The nightclub shooting occurred just a day after a man thought to be a deranged fan fatally shot Christina Grimmie, a rising singing star who gained fame on YouTube and as a contestant on "The Voice", while she was signing autographs after a concert in Orlando

A suspected Islamic extremist wielding an assault rifle and a handgun has killed about 20 people after taking party-goers hostage inside a gay club in Orlando.
The gunman was carrying a suspicious device, possibly a suicide vest, when he opened fire on the dance floor inside Pulse in the early hours of this morning.
Orlando Police Chief John Mina said authorities have not determined the exact number of people killed, but that 'approximately 20' have died. Another 42 people were taken to hospital.
An FBI spokesman said the mass shooting is being investigated as an act of terrorism, adding that they are looking into whether this was an act of domestic or international terror, and if the shooter was a lone wolf.
Police said the gunman, who was shot dead by officers, was believed to be in his 20s was not a local man, while the FBI believe he may have 'leanings to radical Islamic terrorism'.
The killings took place less than four miles from where The Voice singer and YouTube star Christina Grimmie, 22, was shot dead at The Plaza Live in Orlando on Friday.

Presidential candidates and congressional leaders said Sunday they were stunned and heartbroken by news of the mass shooting at Orlando's Pulse nightclub.

Presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton tweeted that she "woke up to hear the devastating news from Florida. As we wait for more information, my thoughts are with those affected by this horrific act."

Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump tweeted: "Really bad shooting in Orlando. Police investigating possible terrorism. Many people dead and wounded."

Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who remains in the race for the Democratic nomination, called the shooting "horrific" and "unthinkable."

"We should not be selling automatic weapons which are designed to kill people," Sanders said on NBC's Meet the Press. "We have got to do everything that we can on top of that to make sure that guns do not fall into the hands of people who should not have them, criminals, people who are mentally ill. So that struggles continues."

Congressional leaders also reacted with horror to the shooting that authorities say left 50 dead.

"We are horrified and heartbroken to see such hate leveled at so many people hoping just to spend a night out dancing," said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. "Our hearts ache for all those killed in this senseless attack, and we pray for the swift recovery of all those who were wounded. While many questions have yet to be answered, the pain of this attack in a mainstay of the Orlando LGBT community is surely magnified as our nation celebrates LGBT Pride month."

"We will not allow hate and terror to succeed in blinding us with fear," Pelosi added. "

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., wrote on Twitter that he is praying "for those brutally attacked in Orlando."

"While we must learn more about the attacker, the victims and families will not be forgotten," Ryan tweeted.

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, said his committee "will work to support the federal role in investigating this terror attack and protecting against further threats"

"As Americans we must unite to defeat terrorism’s threat to our nation's security," he said.

Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., who also serves on the Senate Homeland Security Committee, said the attack may be "the latest front" for Islamic extremists.

"We know that violent Islam is bent on turning American cities into war zones and, given comments from the FBI, it appears that Orlando could be the latest front," Sasse said. "We mourn the deaths of innocent victims, all made in the image of God. Violent Islam, whether its card-carrying members of ISIS or al-Qa’ida or its crowd-sourced attackers, must be defeated."

Members of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus today said they were horrified by the shooting.

"Though details are still emerging, an attack during Pride Month against Pulse, an iconic gathering place for LGBT Floridians, has a particularly insidious impact on our entire community," said Roddy Flynn, the group's executive director. "Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this tragedy."

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., appealed for blood donations from Orlando-area residents to help shooting victims.

"Our prayers are with those injured and killed early this morning in horrifying act of terror in Orlando," Rubio wrote on Twitter.

Orlando Police Chief John Mina also said the shooter had some sort of 'suspicious device'.

FBI spokesman Danny Banks said during a news conference that the mass shooting is being investigated as an act of terrorism.

He says authorities are looking into whether this was an act of domestic or international terror, and if the shooter was a lone wolf.

Police had said previously on Twitter that there was a 'controlled explosion' at the scene of the shooting at Pulse Orlando.

Mina said that noise was caused by a device intended to distract the shooter.

Dozens of police vehicles, including a SWAT team, swarmed the area around the club.

At least two police pickup trucks were seen taking what appeared to be shooting victims to the Orlando Regional Medical Center.

A bouncer knocked down a partition between the club area and an area in the back where only workers are allowed.

People inside were able to then escape through the back of the club.

Christopher Hansen said he was in the VIP lounge when he started hearing gunshots.

He continued to hear shooting even after he emerged, where police were telling people to back away from the club. He saw injured people being tended to across the street.

'I was thinking, are you kidding me? So I just dropped down. I just said please, please, please, I want to make it out,' he said.

'And when I did, I saw people shot. I saw blood. You hope and pray you don't get shot.'

The incident follows the fatal shooting late Friday of 22-year-old singer Christina Grimmie, who was killed after her concert in Orlando by a 27-year-old Florida man who later killed himself.

On GMA a witness, Jose, said, "there were two shooters." Then the news person came on, right after, to clarify that Jose heard there were two shooters from somebody else. Hmmmm.

Samuel King said he often spoke with Mateen after he graduated high school. King worked at Ruby Tuesday’s restaurant in the Treasure Coast Mall, where Mateen worked at GNC, the nutrition store, he said.

King, who is openly gay, said the Mateen he knew until 2009 did not appear to be anti-gay.

‘What is shocking to me is that the majority of the staff at Ruby Tuesday’s when I worked there were gay,' he said. 'He clearly was not anti-(gay) at least not back then.

Seddique said Mateen had attended Indian River State College, as well as having an associates degree in criminal justice.

In a statement sent Sunday to the Palm Beach Post, the security company confirmed that he had been an employee since September 2007.

He was a 'known quantity' to the FBI and was investigated twice before the mass shooting.

I might as well put item 8 on top, because it confirms everything that follows that I reported earlier. The man who wrote this post obviously does not know about false flags, and that most likely ALL non patsy shooters returned to CIA/Mossad headquarters unhurt. He thinks they are not letting the public know about the other two shooters who "got away", when really, they "got away" because they were not the assigned patsy and are not part of the story line. This explains the high death toll, and other reports about it being more than a one man operation.

Yet not one cell phone video of this shooting starting from the crowd in the night club has surfaced yet. But when terrorists flew planes into the World Trade Center and Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001, Mateen’s behavior suddenly changed.

As students at Spectrum Junior/Senior High School in Stuart watched a plane crash into the second tower on live TV, Mateen stood up in class and claimed that Osama bin Laden was his uncle, said a former classmate, who spoke on the condition that he only be identified by his first name, Michael. Mateen bragged that “[Osama bin Laden] taught me how to shoot an AK-47,” Michael recalled.

The teacher and school police officer pulled Mateen out of class and called his family. When Mateen’s father arrived, he slapped Mateen across the face in view of the other students, according to Michael.

The Miami Herald could not independently verify Michael’s recollections with school officials, but another former classmate, who rode the bus home with Mateen, remembered a similar reaction to the terrorist attacks.

Both Michael and Zirkle believe Mateen was expelled from Spectrum shortly after the incident.

At the time, both were surprised by Mateen’s behavior. Prior to Sept. 11, 2001, Mateen “seemed like a pretty cool guy,” Zirkle said. Michael recalled that Mateen had mentioned the Koran, but only in the context of his family’s religious beliefs. “He tried to get me to read the Koran and I told him, ‘No, I’m a Bible person,’ ” Michael recalled.

After seeing how Mateen reacted to the 9/11 attacks, however, neither was shocked to learn that Mateen was the shooter in Sunday’s attack.

“There were definitely signs,” Michael said.

Other former classmates reacted to the news on Facebook, some with surprise and others by recounting memories of Mateen.

“Omar also stood up in class during the 9/11 attack and after the second plane hit the building he started jumping up and down cheering on the terrorists,” one former classmate wrote.

The former dean of students at Martin County High School, the school Mateen attended during his freshman year, posted on Facebook that Mateen “was a regular in the dean’s office.”

“He had issues. All the records were discarded by the school system, per statute. Clearly, if his employer had access to his juvenile record, he would be the last person to own a weapon,” the former administrator, Marty Bielicki, wrote.

Bielicki did not respond to requests for comment from The Miami Herald.

Neither Zirkle nor Michael remembered Mateen making any homophobic comments that could explain his decision to target a gay nightclub.

After waking up Sunday morning to the news of a massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando, University of Central Florida graduate Garrett Jurss knew he needed to do something to help.

"I went to Pulse, I think, like almost every gay college [student] did or does, and reading the stories where people were and what happened, it's just a heartbreaking, numbing experience," Jurss said.

After Jurss, now 28, found out there was an urgent call for blood, he decided nothing - not even a lifelong fear of needles - would stop him from helping his community in its time of need.

That is, until it came to answering a question on a form at OneBlood, a donation center in Orlando.

Jurss, who tested negative for HIV after entering into a relationship with the man he has been with for the past seven years, thought his sexual history might be a barrier to him donating. His friends, however, assured him Orlando had lifted its restrictions on gay men donating blood (they were mistaken).

After lifting its near-lifetime ban in December on donations from men who have had sex with men, the FDA now recommends a man who has had sex with another man during the past 12 months refrain from donating blood.

But Jurss told NBC OUT the question on the form he received was about his first encounter with a man, not his most recent. He said he left frustrated, feeling there was nothing more he could do.

"I want to be able to help my brothers and sisters that are out there, that are suffering right now," Jurss said. "But I can't, and I feel helpless."

NBC OUT attempted to contact the OneBlood Center in Orlando to get clarification on the language used on the form, but the voicemail inbox was full.

FDA public affairs specialist Tara Goodin wrote in an email to NBC OUT that although centers typically revise their procedures to fall in line with FDA guidance, "establishments may voluntarily elect more stringent donor deferral criteria than those required or recommended by the FDA."

Goodin also told NBC OUT that the Interorganizational Disaster Task Forceassured that all immediate needs for blood were met.
