WARNING: GRAPHIC. There’s a lot of mess to go around in this officer involved shooting. Knowing how to stop the threat you face, and what that might take, is an important part of Active Self Protection.
And from that angle, there are a lot of lessons to learn here. So, what would you have done in their situation?

I would make sure my magazines are loaded with high performance bonded bullets, and nothing else.

Start center mass working up to the head. The head shot is the only sure stopper.

Why would it be anything else but a head shot?
Growing up butchering farm animals and running across some big ass raccoons thats all you ever took were head shots.

Very true.

Center of mass is easier to aim for and hit while a head shot is not. Especially on a moving target. Dear hunting as a kid showed me that pretty quickly.

If you can get a good head shot. It's not always possible, so you will hit center mass first to get the subjects attention, hopefully causing them to pause to get that clear head shot.
