WASHINGTON – For the second year in a row, rain forced U.S. President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle to cancel the annual Fourth of July barbecue they organize to honor military families on U.S. Independence Day.

The White House said in a communique that the event, normally attended by hundreds of military families on the South Lawn of the presidential residence, was canceled due to the possibility of inclement weather in the U.S. capital.

This is Obama's last Fourth of July in the White House, and two days ago he expressed a wish to spend it at a barbecue with military families because, he said, over the past 7 1/2 years that has become one of his favorite traditions.

Despite that, the White House is sticking to a reception later in the day that will include concerts by songstress Janelle Monae and rapper Kendrick Lamar, at which both Obama and the first lady will give speeches.

The Obama family is also celebrating Monday the 18th birthday of eldest daughter Malia, who recently graduated from high school and has decided to take a year's sabbatical before starting her university studies in the fall of 2017 at Harvard.

Americans are celebrating Monday the 240th anniversary of their independence from Britain, a national holiday whose main traditions are barbecues and watching fireworks.

Some 64.5 percent of Americans attend a picnic or barbecue on this holiday and eat a total amount of food worth $6.77 billion, according to the National Retail Federation, or NRF, of the United States.

And on this day alone, 285.3 million tons of fireworks are shot off, according to the American Pyrotechnics Association.

Some of the nation's principal cities, like New York, Washington and Chicago, strengthened security measures over the weekend and on the holiday following the terrorist attacks during the past week in Baghdad, Dacca and Istanbul.
