Gretchen Carlson Files Sexual-Harassment Suit Against Fox News Chief Roger Ailes

Gretchen Carlson, a longtime presence on Fox News Channel, said Tuesday she had filed a lawsuit alleging the top executive at the network, Roger Ailes, made sexual advances on her and ended her career at the 21st Century Fox-owned outlet after she rebuffed him.

A Fox News Channel spokesperson could not be reached for immediate comment.

Carlson, who was a co-anchor at “Fox & Friends” and who more recently anchored a daytime program, “The Real Story with Gretchen Carlson,” alleged in the lawsuit, filed in Superior Court of New Jersey, that she was removed from “Fox & Friends” in 2013 after she complained about behavior by co-host Steve Doocy, and was moved to an afternoon program as a way to diminish her presence at the network. Carlson alleged she was terminated on June 23 after her current contract elapsed.

“We believe that the evidence will confirm that Gretchen was fired from ‘Fox & Friends’ for speaking up about demeaning and discriminatory behavior on and off the set,” said Nancy Erika Smith, an employment litigator at Smith Mullin P.C., a Montclair, N.J., firm that is representing Carlson, in a prepared statement.

Carlson confirmed via Twitter that she is no longer with the network, which she joined in June of 2005.

“Although this was a difficult step to take, I had to stand up for myself and speak out for all women and the next generation of women in the workplace,” Carlson said in a statement. ” I am extremely proud of my accomplishments at Fox News and for keeping our loyal viewers engaged and informed on events and news topics of the day.”

The lawsuit threatens to draw more scrutiny to the most-watched TV-news network on cable, which has made headlines in recent months for the role it has played during the current election cycle. Fox News has battled with Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican candidate for U.S.

President, and drawn attention for the way in which another prominent female anchor, Megyn Kelly, has drawn his ire during a televised debate among that party’s candidates.

Carlson alleged she was fired after rebuking sexual advances by Ailes and after trying to challenge the way that male colleagues treated her. She alleged Ailes propositioned her sexually after she met with him last September to discuss discriminatory treatment.

Maybe Trump wasn’t full of sh*t about having ‘bombs’ to use against Roger Ailes and Fox News

Now that Gretchen Carlson has sued Fox News chief Roger Ailes for sexual harassment, it seems Donald Trump might not have been full of shit about using explosive information to manipulate the conservative news network.

Carlson claims she was fired June 23 after 11 years at Fox for refusing Ailes’ sexual advances and challenging unfair treatment by her male colleagues.

Trump won an ongoing battle with the network and its highest-rated anchor, Megyn Kelly, after boasting to a reporter that he could use damaging information as leverage against Ailes — who had asked the real estate developer and reality TV star to help him fire a longtime employee two years ago.

New York magazine published a report in April that revealed Trump learned some bombshell information while negotiating a contentious severance agreement with Brian Lewis, who spent 17 years as the chief spokesperson for Fox News.

“If Ailes ever truly went to war against Trump, Trump would have the arsenal to launch a retaliatory strike,” wrote Sherman.

Sherman — who wrote about Ailes and Fox News in his book, “The Loudest Voice In The Room” — has reported that Lewis was one of the most powerful figures at the conservative news network and one of the few senior executives who could challenge the chairman and CEO of Fox News and the Fox Television Stations Group.

“A frequent joke around Fox was that while everyone is scared of Roger Ailes, the only person Roger Ailes is scared of is Brian Lewis,” Sherman reported.

Ailes fired Lewis, who had followed him from CNBC to the network that ultimately became MSNBC and then to Fox News, over alleged “financial irregularities” after accusing his longtime PR advisor of serving as a source for Sherman’s book.

Lewis then hired litigator Judd Burstein and claimed he had “bombs” that would destroy Ailes and Fox News.

Ailes then turned to Trump, because Burstein had briefly worked for him in the 1990s, and he helped negotiate a deal that essentially paid Lewis millions to go away, Sherman reported.

But Trump — who was exploring a presidential run and quietly building a campaign team — learned all the secrets that Lewis had threatened to leak.

If true, that may have given Trump leverage over the executive who runs the top-rated cable news network.

Ailes has publicly defended Kelly against Trump, who complained for months about the anchor’s treatment of him and has threatened to boycott Fox News.

But the network has provided a platform for Trump to spout conspiracy theories and walk back whatever outrageous statements he’s using to dominate news coverage, and the presumptive Republican nominee was even invited to sit down for a softball interview with Kelly.

That toothless interview drew far fewer viewers than had been expected, which apparently delighted Ailes — who can’t afford to lose Kelly but doesn’t want to pay her $25 million when her contract expires after this year.

“According to one Fox insider, Ailes was heard ‘snickering’ in a meeting (May 19) when the topic of Kelly’s special came up in conversation,” Sherman reported.

Roger Ailes Nukes Trump: New Attack on Megyn Kelly Is ‘Disturbing’

The Donald renewed his verbal assault on Megyn Kelly last night, and the head of Fox News struck back for the first time in public, demanding an apology.

Donald Trump—self-avowed “ratings machine” though he might be—has finally gone too far for Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes.

The Republican presidential front-runner, who has spent the past day tweeting and re-tweeting nasty insults about Fox News star Megyn Kelly, owes her an apology, Ailes demanded in an extraordinary broadside against the reality-show billionaire, issued on Tuesday afternoon.

“Donald Trump’s surprise and unprovoked attack on Megyn Kelly during her show last night is as unacceptable as it is disturbing,” Ailes said about Trump, who has been a frequent interview guest on Fox & Friends, The O’Reilly Factor, Hannity, and other Fox News programs since the Republican presidential debate that Fox News broadcast on August 6 at which Kelly asked him a tough question about his history of calling women “fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals.”

Trump immediately fired back in a statement.

“I totally disagree with the FOX statement. I do not think Megyn Kelly is a quality journalist. I think her questioning of me, despite all of the polls saying I won the debate, was very unfair. Hopefully in the future I will be proven wrong and she will be able to elevate her standards to a level of professionalism that a network such as FOX deserves.”

Ailes issued his statement a little more than 12 hours after Trump’s angry tweet storm.

“Megyn Kelly represents the very best of American journalism and all of us at FOX News Channel reject the crude and irresponsible attempts to suggest otherwise,” Ailes continued, referring to a raging series of Trump tweets in which the candidate claimed Kelly was “off her game” on her first show after a 10-day vacation, and retweeted a crass assertion that the former Washington litigator is a “bimbo.”

Ailes, who scheduled The Kelly File at the all-important 9 p.m. prime-time slot, went on:

“I could not be more proud of Megyn for her professionalism and class in the face of all of Mr. Trump’s verbal assaults. Her questioning of Mr. Trump at the debate was tough but fair, and I fully support her as she continues to ask the probing and challenging questions that all presidential candidates may find difficult to answer.

“Donald Trump rarely apologizes, although in this case, he should. We have never been deterred by politicians or anyone else attacking us for doing our job, much less allowed ourselves to be bullied by anyone and we’re certainly not going to start now. All of our journalists will continue to report in the fair and balanced way that has made FOX News Channel the number one news network in the industry.”

Ailes's verbal howitzer against the front-running Republican—a highly unusual deployment for any news organization, let alone one that has been the GOP establishment and home of conservative viewers—comes after what seemed a coordinated defense of Kelly by at least 10 other Fox News personalities today on Twitter and on air.

According to CNN’s Brian Stelter, the pro-Kelly comments included Fox & Friends co-host Brian Kilmeade opining on Tuesday’s show that Trump is “totally out of control”;

The Five co-host Dana Perino tweeting, “The intelligence, class & grace of Megyn Kelly shined last night after her week's vacation with her family"; anchor Bret Baier, Kelly’s co-moderator at the debate, tweeting that Trump "has made his feelings clear. But THIS needs to stop;" and Sean Hannity tweeting to Trump, "Leave @Megynkelly Alone."

So far, there has been no word on whether Trump will be welcome on Fox News if he continues his attacks and refuses to apologize.
