It wasn’t until recently that it became easy to find a number to go with the gruesome reality that black people—and black men in particular—live with every day: the ever-present threat of police violence.

Police officers fatally shot nearly 1,000 people last year, according to The Washington Post’s ongoing count. Halfway through 2016, police have shot and killed 506 more. “Unarmed black men are seven times more likely than whites to die by police gunfire,” the Post wrote last year.

And though it seems overly clinical to talk about hundreds of civilian deaths as a number; there’s power in knowing that number. The Washington Post’s impressive tracking work represents the professionalization of an effort that first bubbled up on individual blogs and among smaller advocacy groups.

Of course, this is just one count. The Guardian’s tally is 561 deaths, including 526 shootings. And that discrepancy suggests that as important as these efforts have been, in the absence of a comprehensive federal effort to track such shootings, the full scope of the problem remains unknown.

Still, attempts to track police shootings are meaningful. Coupled with video footage of police violence against black people—grainy, raw, and deeply disturbing in ways that are foreign to many white people but all too familiar to people of color—new technology is forcing Americans to confront life-and-death realities of inequality in the United States.

And as technology helps drive a national conversation about race and police violence, much of that conversation is taking place in digital forums: in tweets and in Facebook posts, and in self-published essays. “It’s the incessant threat of daily life,” the journalist Justin Ellis wrote in an essay in 2014, “the feeling that at any given moment, in any day at any time, everything I have could get snatched away as I’m going through the motions of being me.”

Black Lives Matter has organized its movement largely on social media, which is also where videos of police shootings are published and shared. The larger question is what happens now? Heightened awareness of a drumbeat of killings—including two this week—leaves many people feeling angry, exhausted, and powerless. Counting the number of dead and watching videos of them die doesn’t prevent it from happening again. In one in five fatal shootings, the names of the police officer responsible is never disclosed. Even when they are, many officers face no consequences.

Yet there may be reason for hope. Ethan Zuckerman, the director of the MIT Center for Civic Media and a scholar who has done much thinking and writing about online activism, has written about the importance of monitoring what he calls the equitability of activism in both the digital and physical realms.

“‘Monitoring’ sounds passive, but it’s not—it’s a model for channeling mistrust to hold institutions responsible, whether they’re the institutions we’ve come to mistrust or the new ones we’re building today,” he wrote in a blog post last year. “When the Black Panthers were founded in Oakland, CA in the late 1960s, they were an organization focused on combatting police brutality. They would follow police patrol cars and when officers got out to make an arrest, the Panthers—armed, openly carrying weapons they were licensed to own—would observe the arrest from a distance, making it clear to officers that they would intervene if they felt the person arresting was being harassed or abused, a practice they called ‘Policing the Police.’”

This kind of monitorial citizenship, he says, benefits hugely from technology—whether it involves building a dedicated website for counting fatal shootings by police, forming an organization to videotape crime, or leveraging digital networks to share footage of a deadly police confrontation. As Zuckerman puts it in his blog post, “it allows many people working together to monitor situations that would be hard for any one individual to see.”

“The one stance that’s not acceptable as far as I’m concerned,” he added, “is that of disengagement, of deciding that you’re powerless and remaining that way.”

Yea Killary lucked out and yes I think this will push more restriction on gun laws. What's surprising to me is how many ppl can't believe this would happen in Dallas, it's a big city and you have a sentiment of many blacks that will easily loose it (like in most places lets face it), if not Dallas, could have happened in H-town, Austin, OKC, Arkansas, Phoenix, etc...

Perhaps I'm not surprised because I wasn't raised in "sheltered" U.S.A., but no matter how sheltered you think you are, some groups can only take so much (without those that should be held accountable) before people will snap and fight back. Obviously these officers killed were victims since they were surprised (and my thoughts/prayers are with their families), but in the perpetrators' eyes, they were part of a national force that has been responsible for unwarranted killings across the U.S. lately.

Sources told the Los Angeles Times that Johnson has no ties to terror groups and no known criminal history. He has lived in the Dallas area and has family members living in Mesquite, Texas, east of Dallas, the newspaper reports, citing federal law enforcement sources.

A black SUV was found at the scene registered to Delphene Johnson, who is Micah Johnson’s mother according to Facebook posts and public records, NBC Dallas-Fort Worth reports. Live helicopter video from the news station showed police at her home in Mesquite.

The suspect is a veteran of the U.S. Army, but it is not clear when he joined the military and when he left, and on what terms.

Micah Johnson’s Facebook page provides few details about his life. In May, he posted a “Black Power” poster, one of the few images on his page

Police previously said two people were spotted getting into a Mercedes into downtown Dallas carrying camouflage duffle bags, the police chief said. The car was spotted by police and stopped on the highway. The people in the car were taken into custody. The chief said a woman was also arrested near El Centro College.

Police are not sure if any of those three people who are in custody are connected to the shooting.

One man who was marching during the protest, Mark Hughes, was incorrectly identified by police as a “person of interest” in the shooting, and his photo was distributed on Twitter by the department. Hughes was open carrying a rifle, which is legal in Texas, to exercise his Second Amendment rights, but he turned over the gun to a police officer after the shooting began so he would not be mistaken as a suspect. Five Dallas police officers were killed Thursday night when a sniper opened fire on them at a rally against police brutality.

Brent ThompsonBrent Thompson, 43, was a DART transit police officer since 2009 and is the first DART officer killed in the line of duty.
Thompson taught at the police academy, previously serving as a private contractor in Iraq and Afghanistan and was a grandfather.

He served in Iraq and Afghanistan helping to train local police forces. He had previously served in the Marines.

"Now is not the right time," Mayor Mike Rawlings said.

On Friday, June 10, 2016, someone hacked into the Twitter account of #BlackLivesMatter (BLM) leader and former Baltimore mayoral candidate DeRay McKesson. McKesson later confirmed the hack to The Baltimore Sun.

On June 11, 2016, a Twitterer who calls himself The Saint (@TheSaintNegro) tweeted a direct-message conversation on June 10 between KcKesson and another BLM leader Johnetta Elzie (Netta), in which the two discussed talking with Attorney General Loretta Lynch about plans to bring on martial law by causing chaos at the upcoming Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio, and the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, PA, so as to keep Obama in office.

S: “I wanted to touch base with you about the summer of chaos. So far we have over 2,000 people bused in from different cities and another 6,000 to 8,000 expected to drive into Cleveland for the Convention.”

S: “They will not be ready for the crowds we are bringing and they will blame Trump for it, especially if we shut it down. The GOP will have to replace him at that point or we will continue the disruptions nationwide.”

DM: “I will pass the info along. Good work, Sam. You never let us down. It’s so important we stop Trump. He can not be president. He will destroy everything we worked so hard for and we can’t trust….”

DM: “…today and he [Sam?] confirmed that there will be around 10,000 protesters disrupting the [Republican] convention. Plans are being made for other cities as well for upcoming Trump events. Ads have already been placed looking for people to help. I know you don’t care for them [white people] but this is the time we need our white allies doing a lot of the work for us. They are the ones who listen the best.”

JE: “That will put fear into the GOP and the country when they can’t have their convention for all their racist supporting Trump. We’ve worked too hard and closely with the Obama administration to have that racist ass take it all away and Hillary…. You know I can’t stand those white allies, but yo right this is the best to use them. They hang on every word you say and will do whatever is asked. I just hate all that kiss ass they try to do. Like that changes who they are.”

DM: “We have a lot of white allies volunteering for Trump’s campaign to pass along information to us before it’s made public so we know when rallies are coming up before they are announced. That way we can plan major disruptions in those cities in advance. We just have to keep our names out of this and let these [white] people do the work for us by pushing how Trump’s racist ways will destroy….”

Micah Johnson Was Kicked Out of the Army for Stealing Panties

And Booker was not the only one who described Johnson as withdrawn. The obvious explanation would have been that he was suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, as have too many returned vets who experienced the horrors of our longest war.

But by numerous reports, Johnson and his Army Reserves engineering unit did not see so much as a moment of combat.

At least part of Johnson’s manifest transformation seems to have been the result not of PTSD, but of what might be termed PTDD, Post Traumatic Disgrace Disorder.

As reported by one of his bunkmates in Afghanistan, Johnson suffered a particular shame.

“We all knew he was a pervert cuz he got caught stealing girls’ panties,” the bunkmate later said in a Facebook post.

All this seems to have transpired shortly after Johnson’s unit was detailed to assist in the preparations for what was described as “a surprise thank you visit” by President Obama to Bagram Air Base on the evening before Memorial Day in 2014.

“To all of you, I’m here on a single mission, and that is to thank you for your extraordinary service.,” Obama told the assembled troops. “I thank you as your Commander-in-Chief because you inspire me…I’m also here representing 300 million Americans who want to say thank you as well. When it comes to supporting you and your families, the American people stand united. We support you. We are proud of you. We stand in awe of your service.”

Nobody was prouder than Johnson’s sister, Nicole Johnson, when she posted a front page newspaper photo of the event on Facebook the next day.

“Happy Memorial Day!...Obama went to visit my big bro in Bagram!”

Her excitement and the president’s praise could have only deepened the shame when he was deemed a panty perv and and shipped home three months early to face sexual harassment charges.

Down in Texas, Micah Johnson waited for his lawyer to work out some kind of deal with the Army. Family friend Myrtle Booker noted that along with becoming withdrawn, Johnson had developed an increased interest in firearms, as might befit a onetime panty stealer who found himself lacking.

Also in August, Johnson discovered that a gun stealer had burgled his home in Mesquite and made off with two of them.. Johnson of course called the police and two cops responded, making out a report.

By April of 2015, the Army had surprised even his lawyer by dropping the charges. Johnson received an honorable discharge and remained a member of the ready reserve. He apparently resumed attending the Academy of Combat Warrior Arts on North Greenville Avenue in Richardson.

DALLAS — Micah Johnson sought to join a black militant group two years before he targeted white police officers for death but was turned away after a background check.

After being sent home from Afghanistan for stealing women’s underwear, Johnson was discharged from the Army in late summer 2014 just as the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner were energizing the nascent Black Lives Matter movement. With his Army identity shattered, as his mother told The Blaze, Johnson then sought a new one in the black power movement by joining one of several groups that believe in armed resistance against white society, especially police.

Before he could join, though, a tipster asked a man in the Dallas-area movement to screen Johnson for involvement in black activist groups.

Ken Moore of the Collective Black People’s Movement (CBPM) said that he was asked to look into Johnson by an unidentified black activist group. When he discovered the Army veteran was discharged for sexual harassment, he labelled him “unfit for recruitment.”

Malik Shabazz, former chair of the New Black Panther Party, told The Daily Beast that the background check system described by Moore effectively blacklisted Johnson from membership in black nationalist and black liberation groups across the country.

“Once you’re blacklisted by the alert that we put out, that’s a wrap,” Moore told The Daily Beast.

Though shunned from groups like the People’s New Black Panther Party and the Black Riders Liberation Party, Johnson continued attending protests and events in the area, according to multiple people within the Dallas activist community.

Online, Johnson was loosely affiliated with the African American Defense League, the Black Riders Liberation Party, the Huey P. Newton Gun Club, and South Dallas’ Muhammad Mosque Number 48, which is run by acolytes of Louis Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam. Both the Houston and Dallas chapters of the People’s New Black Panther Party said unequivocally that Johnson was never a member of either group.

“He was basically seen as a loner, a sympathizer,” Moore said.

Moore was speaking at a Black Lives Matter rally in Forth Worth on Thursday when he heard from the CBPM network of a “non-sanctioned shooting” of police.

“He was already ostracized [by the blacklisting],” Moore said, speculating that Johnson had a “psychological break” after Alton Sterling and Philando Castile were killed by white police.

One of the groups Johnson followed on Facebook issued a call to arms over Sterling and Castile’s deaths just hours before he attacked.

“It’s on in 2016!” Black Riders leader Lakesia Washington posted to Facebook on Thursday afternoon. “R.I.P. to Alton Sterling in LA and Philando Castile in Minnesota!”

Washington continued with language that could’ve come from Johnson’s lips, according to Dallas police who say he told them he was avenging black men’s death at the hands of cops and that he wanted to kill white officers.

“We assert the right of self-defense by whatever means necessary, and reserve the right of maximum retaliation against our racist oppressors, no matter what the odds against us are,” she wrote. “From here on in, if we must die anyway, we will die fighting back and we will not die alone! We intend to see that our racist oppressors also get a taste of death!”

The very same Black Riders post answers the cryptic message Johnson wrote in his own blood just before he was killed by a police robot.

“RB” was scrawled on a wall inside the building where Johnson was holed up, according to Dallas police chief David Brown. It is likely that Johnson was writing “RBG,” a favorite acronym of the Black Riders that stands for “red, black, and green”—the colors of the Pan-African flag.

Brown was asked about The Daily Beast’s reporting during a Monday press conference and would not say whether police believe Johnson was attempting to write RBG before he died.

“Until you told me we've exhausted every lead, I'm not going to be convinced that we know everything about what happened,” the chief told reporters.

If RBG was the slogan he was trying to write, one of Johnson’s final acts was to pay homage to the movement he wished so badly to join. Ignored in life, Johnson has been embraced in death.

“R.I.P. Micah...X...Johnson !!!... RBG 4 LIFE!” Washington wrote on Saturday. “RIP, you represented the few brave African soldiers” wrote another Black Rider follower. “Nat Turner of Our Time. Remember Him with All Revolutionary Ancestors,” posted another. Other members changed their profile photos to Johnson’s photo at his time of death: a dashiki, a raised fist, and a cold stare.

Moore claimed on Sunday not to know which organization had asked him to look into Johnson, saying only that the message came from Oakland, California, where the Black Riders has a chapter. Several members of the group did not respond to requests for comment, and Shabazz would not confirm or deny that Johnson had been trying to join the BRLP.

When asked if Johnson was a member of the Huey P. Newton Gun Club, which advocates blacks take full advantage of their right to bear arms, leader Makio Shakur said he could neither confirm or deny Johnson’s role. Shakur did condemn the killing of police officers, however.

“That’s not what we’re about,” he said. “We support the Second Amendment rights of all people, and will be there to defend them whether they are white, black, Hispanic, Asian, whatever.”

But gun club co-founder Babu Omowale told Breitbart News “he wasn’t a stranger to us” adding that Johnson was well-known by members of the gun club and the People’s New Black Panthers Party.

As for Johnson’s relationship with the Nation of Islam mosque, another gag order is in effect. When asked on Saturday if Johnson attended services there, two men monitoring the parking lot repeated that they had no comment and asked The Daily Beast to leave.

Much like the secrecy around Johnson after he died, his public life became ever more attenuated as he barreled towards mass murder.

High school classmates remembered him not as a loner but as a “fun-loving, goofy guy,” as one told The Wall Street Journal. The military had been a big part of his future, too: Johnson was a cadet in the Junior ROTC and enlisted in the Army Reserve in March 2009 before he graduated high school, according to Defense Department records.

Despite his Army life unraveling, Johnson kept hanging out with high school friends in his hometown of Mesquite, according to former classmate Julius Young.

Young told The Daily Beast he and Johnson and several other friends would casually drink together in summer 2014 but then something changed. Young couldn’t remember exactly when he last saw Johnson, but he was certain it was before Ferguson. He chalked Johnson’s disappearance up to life simply pulling people apart. Kids, a new job, moving away, Young said. But Johnson had none of those reasons, and was working as an in-home caregiver for his disabled younger brother, receiving paychecks from the state in the same town as Young. At the same time, he was seeking acceptance in the movement that shunned him.

Young said he now realizes his friend was quietly becoming radicalized.

“Everyone got secrets,” he said.

The president of a Minneapolis police union Tuesday commended a quartet of officers who reportedly walked off their jobs providing security at a WNBA game on Saturday night after some players wore “Black Lives Matter” shirts calling for change after recent police shootings.
