BATON ROUGE, La. - The Advocate reports that two Baton Rouge police officers have been killed after shots were fired near police headquarters Sunday morning, according to William Daniel, the city's chief administrative officer.

The officers were shot near police headquarters early Sunday - and - as of 9:30 a.m. a manhunt was on for the suspect or suspects.

An active shooter situation was described in the area and Airline Highway was closed in both directions between Goodwood Boulevard and I-12.

BATON ROUGE - Police have closed streets between Baton Rouge Police Headquarters and I-12 where law enforcement officers have been shot.

Sources say two Baton Rouge Police officers and one East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office deputy are dead following the shooting. Another officer was critically injured.

A witness told WBRZ News 2, a man was dressed in black with his face covered shooting indiscriminately when he walked out between a convenience store and car wash across from Hammond Air Plaza. Shots were fired around 9 a.m. Sunday. The exact location of the business where the shooting took place has yet to be released.

A very large manhunt began immediately with officers hurrying to contain the scene.

Both lanes of Airline Highway were shut down from Goodwood to Old Hammond and from Old Hammond to Drusilla Drive. LA DOTD confirmed the closures were related to police presence in the area.

3 Baton Rouge Cops Shot and Killed by Suspect With Assault Rifle

One suspect is dead and two have been arrested after a mass shooting that killed three officers and wounded three more.

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana — The entire Baton Rouge Police Department descended on the scene where three law enforcement officers were killed and three more were wounded by a man with an assault rifle Sunday morning.

Hundreds of officers, dozens of cars, two helicopters, and a mobile command center surrounded the area around a B-Quik where around 9 a.m. officers responded to a call of a suspicious person carrying an assault rilfe. Soon after, the suspect and police exchanged fire, which was partially captured by an eyewitness on video.

Two police officers and one sheriff's deputy were killed, according to the mayor's office. Three other officers were wounded. "Of the two who survived the shooting, one is in critical condition and the other is in fair condition," the AP reported. The Advocate reports that the dead shooter is from Missouri.

Two other suspects were apprehended after they changed clothes at a Walmart, according to WAFB-TV. Police got a call of two men who had entered a Walmart in Port Allen, across the river from Baton Rouge, wearing head-to-toe black. The men left the store in different clothes and drove southbound. The men were stopped by police in Addis, Louisiana and taken to police headquarters for questioning.

Police did not immediately disclose any additional details about the suspect, but CBS and NBS News, citing law enforcement sources, identified the alleged gunman as 29-year-old Gavin Long of Kansas City, Missouri.


Immediately after the shooting, police asked the public to be on the lookout for men wearing all black or all camouflage. Witnesses called 9-1-1 after noticing some suspicious behavior after two men, dressed all in black, emerged from a vehicle, a gray Nissan with Texas license plates, and went into a Port Allen Walmart. The same men then emerged wearing different clothes. Police have detained the men and impounded the vehicle for investigation.

Witnesses reported a man, dressed in black and with his face covered, started shooting indiscriminately between a car wash and a convenience store around 9 a.m. Sunday.

“I walked out into the street to see what was going on, there was a man lying in the street,” the witness said. “I assume he was dead because he wasn’t moving.”

8:40 a.m.: A police officer at Airline Highway and Old Hammond Highway in Baton Rouge alerts a police dispatcher that a woman called to report a man with a coat and assault rifle behind a store, according to the police recording. The store is later identified as B-Quick Convenience store, around a mile away from the Baton Rouge Police headquarters.

8:41 a.m.: First instance of "officer down" comes one minute into the recording. "Oh there's shots fired! Officer down!" a male voice shouts. "Shots fired! Officer down! Got a city officer down." Replies, though largely unintelligible due to the quality of the recording, appeared calm. The officer then says: "Don't know where the subject's shooting from!"

8:43 a.m.: Police have yet to locate the shooter. A male officer says: "He is not in sight. Possible sniper."

8:44 a.m.: Police appears to request air support. A female voice says: "Subject's supposed to be at Benny's Car Wash. Still shooting."

8:45 a.m.: Barely a minute later, another officer is injured. "I'm hit, left arm, argh," a male officer says. The response, from a female voice, was just two syllables, "10-four," a phrase commonly used in law enforcement to denote acknowledgement.

Long was killed by officers in the firefight that happened when he came into contact with law enforcement officers at a car wash on Airline Highway near Old Hammond Highway. A witness reported seeing Long, dressed in all black and wearing a mask while carrying a rifle in the Airline/Goodwood area.

ABC News reports that Long is listed as a former Marine in public records. He’s listed to have started duty in August 2005 until his discharge as an E-5 level sergeant in August 2010. Long had been deployed to Iraq from June 2008 to January 2009, according to WSJ.com.


Records have also revealed that the man carried out the attack that killed three and injured three more on his birthday.

The Wall Street Journal connected the attack to an anti-government group known as the New Freedom Group.

Heavy.com looked into court records and found that Long filed for divorce from his wife in 2011 in a Kansas City court. It’s unknown if Long had children with his wife.

The University of Alabama’s website also found that Long was a Dean’s List student at the school in 2012, but Heavy journalists found out that he was a student there for just one semester. The Associated Press reported that campus police had no interactions with Long during his time at the school.

Two other suspects were arrested in Addis in connection with the shooting after a witness spotted them entering the Port Allen Walmart to change out of suspicious-looking black clothing. The men were brought to BRPD VCU for questioning in connection with the shooting.

Police have said they believe Long was the lone attacker in the incident. LSP's Col. Mike Edmonson said in an afternoon press conference that the shooting scenario is no longer active and that the shooter, Long, has been killed.

Social media accounts for the killer were tracked by journalists and linked on Twitter after it was discovered he went by the online alias "Cosmo Setepenra." In his Instagram and Twitter posts, Long espoused anti-police views and even praised the Dallas attacks in one post.
