Teenagers attacked police with bottles and knives in Hyde Park as the West End suffered the worst outbreak of youth violence since the 2011 riots.

Witnesses described how the Royal Park erupted into a “warzone” as hundreds of youths clashed with officers called after trouble flared at a water-fight and music party organised on social media.

Families and office workers enjoying the last of the evening sunshine scattered as more than a thousand teenagers fought running battles with riot police along the banks of the Serpentine, a few hundred yards from Kensington Palace.

The mob was driven back to Marble Arch where around 500 remained until midnight, hurling bottles at the ranks of police and chanting “Black Lives Matter”.

Police were called to the restaurant at 1701 E. Empire St. around 6:04 p.m. July 2, in response to a fight. Police were told a large group of people were fighting and yelling, but when officers arrived, the melee had broken up and many of the patrons had left, according to a police report.

The investigation revealed that a fight initially broke out between two subjects and then expanded to include about 40 people, police said.

During the incident, a 3-year-old suffered a minor injury after a game was knocked over and struck the child. No other injuries were reported.


Police have not said what instigated the fight to break out.


Facing charges are: Nevin D. Funches, 23, of Bloomington, charged with mob action; Antoine C. Smith, 24, of Normal, charged with aggravated battery in public and mob action; and Demetrius D. Moore, 24, of Normal, also charged with mob action.


Funches and Moore remain in custody on $20,000 bonds. Smith posted $2,035 and was released.


An arrest warrant has been issued for Lawrence “Thoon” Johnson, 27, for mob action, but he is not in custody and BPD is seeking the public’s help in finding him. He is described by police as African-American, standing 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighing 140 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. His bond was set at $30,035.
