It really is a difficult question. If in your heart of hearts you believe you are doing the right thing, when objectively you are not, are you a hero? We don't know the man in the OP photo, and we don't know what he did. But there are innumerable examples throughout history of people believing they were doing the right thing, when in fact they were not. I'm not sure I'd call them heroes.

People regard Chris Kyle a hero, when his stated goal was just to kill as many moslems as possible, making no distinction between innocent and guilty. "Kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out" are not words of a hero.
