Why is it called the summer olympics when it is mid-winter in Rio de Janeiro?

It would also seem their weather tends to the more subtropical so its probably more correct to say they have 2 seasons rather than 4 and those are most likely a wet season and a dry season.
Their average temps this time of year are around the low 20C / low 70's F ranging to about 80F in December-Jan. The weather seems to be fairly consistent most of the year.
It seems that the first winter games was in 1956. Not that long ago really.
