Turkish tanks cross Syrian border in military op to retake city of Jarablus from ISIS
https://www.rt.com/news/356959-turkish-tanks-cross-syria/
Turkey has launched a ground incursion into Syria targeting Islamic State and Kurdish fighters near the town of Jarablus. Ankara says it wants to take the town to stop cross-border attacks, while the Kurds warn that Turkish troops will get into a quagmire.
“At 4:00 this morning, operations started in the north of Syria against terror groups which constantly threaten our country, like Daesh [Arabic name for Islamic State] and the PYD [he Democratic Union Party of Syria],” Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a speech in Ankara, adding that the incursion had been prompted by cross-border attacks originating from Jarablus that should be “stopped.”
Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said the military operation would be “short and results-based,” while insisting that it doesn’t violate international law.
The Turkish operation is focused on the Kurdish border town of Jarablus, which has been held by the Islamic State terrorist group since July of 2013.
Turkish artillery began shelling targets across the Syrian border earlier on Wednesday while its tanks entered Syrian territory, as reported by Reuters. The launch of the ground offensive was confirmed by Turkish state news agency Anadolu, citing military sources. The operation, called Euphrates Shield, is also being supported by Turkish air forces, as well as A-10S and F-16 warplanes from the US-led coalition.
Turkish-backed rebels are assisting the Turkish troops. Hours into the operation, Free Syrian Army fighters captured the village of Keklice located some three kilometers from Jarablus, Anadolu reported, citing military sources.
Commenting on Operation Euphrates Shield, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Kurdish fighters must remain east of the Euphrates River or Turkey will “do what is necessary.”
Turkish media reported earlier that IS had launched retaliation attacks into the Turkish border town of Karkamis after the violence around Jarablus escalated. Elsewhere in Istanbul, law enforcement reportedly conducted raids targeting suspected IS sympathizers, according to the Dogan news agency.
Turkish-backed Syrian rebels report entering Jarablus
Syrian rebel groups supported by Turkish tanks and special forces, as well as US airpower, say they have entered Jarablus and now control about 50 percent of the town that had been held by Islamic State since 2013, according to Reuters. Rebel sources told the agency that most IS fighters had fled the town, while some had surrendered.
“Daesh [Islamic State] fighters have withdrawn from several villages on the outskirts of Jarablus and are heading south towards the city of al Bab,” a commander from the Failaq al Sham rebel group told the news agency.
Damascus has condemned the Turkish incursion, with the Syrian Foreign Ministry calling it a breach of Syria’s national sovereignty, Reuters reported citing Syrian state television.
Syrian Kurds call Turkish op ‘declaration of war’
Spokesman for the YPG Kurdish militia, Redur Xelil, called Turkey’s move “blatant aggression in Syrian internal affairs.” Aldar Xelil, another influential Kurdish politician, accused Turkey of initiating an occupation of Syria, saying the operation amounted to “a declaration of war” on the autonomous administration set up by Kurdish groups in northern Syria in 2011.
Saleh Muslim, head of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD), warned that the Turkish forces would get bogged down in a quagmire and ultimately be defeated.
Speaking to ANFNews, Muslim said that Turkey had gone from targeting Syrian Kurds through proxies to directly fighting Kurdish fighters in Syria on the ground, adding that while Turkey had made the decision to enter Syria, withdrawing would not be as simple.
The PYD believes that Turkey has launched its operation to prevent the Kurds from retaking it from IS, Salam Ali, PYD’s representative in Moscow, told RIA Novosti.
“Jarablus is located in the north of Kobani area and our forces advanced close to it. After the Kurdish troops took the city of Manbij we had plans to go in that direction. Apparently Turkey invaded from the North not to let the Kurds have this city,” he said.
The Syrian Kurdish militia YPG attempted to retake Jarablus last year, but were reportedly prevented from doing so when Ankara threatened to intervene.
In the meantime, the Kurdish Firat news agency (ANFNews) reported that 29 civilians have been killed by the advancing Turkish and allied troops so far. Some 3,000 ethnic Kurds have reportedly fled Jarablus and its neighboring areas since the Turkish operation became imminent. The Kurds object to the operation, believing it to be a ploy to prevent Kurdish militias from retaking the town.
Meanwhile, Russia expressed its concern over the growing tensions on the Turkish-Syrian border provoked by the operation. Moscow is deeply worried over the potential consequences after Ankara sent troops into Syrian territory, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. It added that the Turkish operation could lead to a further deterioration in the situation and casualties among civilians.

Turkey formally requests US to extradite ‘coup-plotting’ Gulen – State Dept
https://www.rt.com/usa/356915-turkey-request-extradite-gulen/
This is the CIA supported coup plotter, btw. Starting from scratch after fleeing Turkey 17 years ago, he has set up hundreds of Islamic schools across the Middle East and the US too. He is preaching a 'modern islam'. After the cleaning out of Kemalist (secular) military commanders in Turkey between 2009-2012 aproximately, they were replaced w Gülenist commanders in the armed forces. It was these, primarily in the Air Force and the gendarmerie that were behind the coup attempt in Turkey on the 15th of July.
My prediction is that Fetullah Gülen never will be extradited to Turkey, but he may die quite soon, of natural courses of course, he is quite old after all. Most likely the corps will have blue lips...

That was Erdogan's coup. He gained the most.
From reading below, it looks like we condone the invasion. Looks like they are publicly stating they are killing Kurds too.
Syria Condemns Turkish Invasion As "Breach Of Sovereignty" While Joe Biden Meets With Erdogan (http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-08-24/syria-condemns-turkish-invasion-breach-sovereignty-while-joe-biden-meets-erdogan)
As reported earlier (http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-08-24/turkish-tanks-cross-syria-border-part-anti-isis-operation-live-feed), Turkish special forces, tanks and jets backed by planes from the U.S.-led coalition launched their first co-ordinated offensive into Syria on Wednesday to try to drive Islamic State from the border and prevent further gains by Kurdish militia fighters. Turkish tank units and Syrian rebels backed by the NATO member crossed into northern Syria to push Islamic State out of the border town of Jarablus, military sources said.
"Euphrates Shield", named after the river running nearby, is Turkey's first major military operation since the abortive coup. It was the first time warplanes from Turkey have struck in Syria since November, when Turkey downed a Russian warplane near the border, and the first significant incursion by Turkish special forces since a brief operation to relocate the tomb of Suleyman Shah, a revered Ottoman figure, in February 2015. The operation comes four days after a suicide bomber suspected of links to the group killed 54 people at a wedding in the southeastern city of Gaziantep.
Turkey's President Tayyip Erdogan said the operation was targeting Islamic State and the Kurdish PYD party, whose gains in northern Syria have alarmed Turkey. Ankara views the PYD as an extension of Kurdish militants fighting an insurgency on its own soil, putting it at odds with Washington, which sees the group as an ally in the fight against Islamic State.

He gained the most because he managed to evade the coup. It was badly done, just like the bay of pigs in early 60's in Cuba, then Castro strengthened his hold of Cuba, just like Erdogan strengthened his hold of Turkey now. You can't say that Castro planned the invasion at the bay of pigs, just because he gained power from it, could you? In Turkey they captured the coup makers, and they are all Gülenist, iow followers of Fetullah Gülen who has been living in the US the last 17 years while he has started hundreds if not 1000's of Islamist schools all over the Middle East and even some in the US. Erdogan and Gülen where great friends until about 2010, but since then they had a fallout. Gülen tried to get to Erdogan in late 2013, by exposing his corruption through tapes of his phone conversations, obtained through wire taps approved by judiciary, Gülen controlled most likely. Put a dent in Erdogans armour, but Turkish people in general don't care about his corruption as long as he is one of them. Every government before has been corrupt, so they don't care if the current is too!

I think there is a strange alliance going on at the moment allowing for Turkey to move in.
And yes it's clear it isn't aimed at ISIS but at the Kurds.

That is indeed interesting points. I agree it may very well be a fake military op, just a simple transfer of territory from ISIS to Al Nusra/whatever, because ISIS realized that they couldn't hold it any longer, from the Kurdish rebels, and no country could be seen to openly help ISIS that wants to be regarded as a respectable government.
I don't think it was an Erdogan staged coup 5 weeks ago though, but because he came out on top, CIA/USA has agreed to play nice with him for the time being... Turkey is a strategic country in the Middle East after all. Life returning to normal here quickly is more due to the national psychology of the Turks.

Biden has a mountain to climb
THE EDITORIAL BOARD
ISTANBUL
Published August 23, 2016
U.S. Vice President Joe Biden will meet with Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan and Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım on his visit to Turkey on Wednesday.
There are only two topics of discussion during this much overdue visit by a senior U.S. official: The extradition of the leader of the cult that was behind the bloody coup attempt on July 15 and the U.S.'s continued support of the PKK terrorist organization's Syrian wing, the People's Democratic Union (PYD). Turkey will also convey its expectation of broader and active support from the U.S., which is supposedly a close ally, in the fight against DAESH
.
At a time of increasing security threats in the region, strategic partnerships and cooperation are becoming ever more important. The number of countries facing direct terrorist attacks is increasing every day. The world of diplomacy is trying to survive under the dark shadow cast by international terrorism. The meaning and value of true partnerships have never been more important. Alliances and partnerships that fail to adapt and refuse present a common front against terrorist groups are destined to fall apart, with constituent parts defeated in detail.
Today, Turkey and the U.S., two allies that fought side by side, through thick and thin, during and after the Cold War, are suffering from a major breach of trust. The Turkish public simply no longer trusts the U.S. administration. Never have bilateral ties been this frayed, never have ordinary Turks been this disillusioned in the history of Turkey-U.S. relations. The mainly leftist anti-American sentiment worldwide is no longer one shared among fringe groups, but is the dominant attitude of the Turkish people, irrespective of their political, ethnic or religious affiliation. This is very unfortunate for the two allies that truly need each other and it is entirely the fault of the Obama administration.
When confronted with the most traumatic episode of the last half a century on July 15, the Turkish society as a whole demanded complete support from countries it considered friends. What it saw from the U.S. administration was far from friendly.
We can only hope Biden is aware of what is expected of him and that he is ready to present a wide range of confidence-building measures that intend to address the grievous mistakes committed by Washington, D.C. Turkey has its fill of pointless rhetoric or empty promises. Vice President Biden needs to do more than smile and shake hands, but offer a solid commitment to tackle the dual threats posed by the PYD and the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ). If not, his visit will be nothing but a part of Obama's delaying tactics and he will just be another U.S. official who enjoyed a kebab and the scenery.
If Biden fails to address Turkey's concerns, Obama will prove that he is just a lame duck president and Turkey will have to suspend its relations with the U.S. until a new administration, hopefully with a new foreign policy vision, arrives in Washington, D.C.
Turkish politics as a whole has never been as united as it is today. At a time like this, the country is confronted with terrorist groups like DAESH, the PKK or its Syrian wing, the PYD, that kill innocent civilians. Turkey feels abandoned by its allies and the rest of the international community on the issue of terrorism. Terrorism is an existential threat and there can be no negotiation on Turkey's future. The U.S., which has left Turkey alone against FETÖ, DAESH and the PKK, should not be surprised if Turkey turns its back on it at a time of need.
Unfortunately, for Turkey and the world, the Obama era, which began with so much hope, will forever be remembered as a blatant failure. The U.S. diplomacy's solution to any difficulty seems to be to bury its head in the sand. Its mistake may be to trust the wrong people at the wrong time or even just plain ignorance. We can only wait and see whether Biden will be able to persuade Turkey to give Obama just one more chance. From past experience, such an outcome can only be described as widely optimistic.
We can only hope that the new U.S. administration that will take office next February will employ officials proficient in diplomacy and knowledgeable in Turkey and the sentiments of the Turkish public. The Obama administration harmed vital U.S. interests by completely severing close ties with Turkey and did a disservice to both countries. The new administration has its work cut out for it.

This columnist watched on the sidelines as U.S. Vice President Joe Biden put on a Hollywood act in Ankara during his one-day visit. Yet, what he did in Ankara would hardly earn him an Oscar. In short, his performance was rather poor.
He flashed smiles all day long and pretended to embrace the Turkish people.
He said he was "so sorry" that his visit came over a month after the failed coup attempt.
He also said he wished Fethullah Gülen, the mastermind of the failed coup who lives in Pennsylvania, lived in another country so that Turkey and the U.S. would not have had to experience such an ugly extradition brawl.
He saw for himself how the rebel fighter jets bombed and damaged the Parliament building on the night of July 15.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım repeated the calls for the extradition of Gülen. Erdoğan also claimed that Gülen continues to lead and organize his terrorist gang from the U.S. and that he should be put under house arrest pending the procedures of his extradition.
Biden, full of sympathy and remorse, told our leaders that the U.S. is a country ruled by law and that the legal procedures will take their course and that he cannot deliver Gülen right at this moment.
Yes, of course, when the U.S. was clandestinely kidnapping and arresting al-Qaida suspects all around the world and putting them into the hell hole called Guantanamo Bay, the U.S. was following the rule of law, international law and even American laws...
The law in the U.S. is, of course, as supreme as the policemen that kill innocent law-abiding black Americans in the streets and get away with it.
So it seems Biden came to Ankara, listened to us with great "sympathy" and then told us what would not happen and flew home.
But Ankara also had a surprise for the U.S. vice president. The Turkish military incursion into northern Syria to push DAESH away from our borders and to push the Syrian-Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) militants out of Manbij, on the same day that Biden arrived in Ankara, was a clear message to Washington. Turkey had been telling the U.S. that it was unhappy with its alliance with the PYD terrorists, who are an extension of the PKK, which is recognized by Washington as a terrorist organization. Turkey had been telling the U.S. it would not allow PYD militants to cross west of the Euphrates in northern Syria but the Americans promised that once Manbij was cleared of DAESH terrorists, the Kurds would go back to the east of the Euphrates.
However, Turkey realized that the Kurds were in Manbij to stay and had no intention of withdrawing to the east of the Euphrates and that the U.S. would not keep its promise. So Ankara took matters into its own hands and will now clear our neighboring areas of DAESH and will push the PYD out of Manbij and into the east of the Euphrates. So Biden went home with a bitter smile.
