“Huge Victory for Health” – FDA Orders Antibacterials Removed from Soaps
Posted on September 2, 2016

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday issued a rule banning antibacterials in soap, which the agency said were no more effective than simple soap and much more harmful for the environment and consumer health.

The FDA gave companies a year to remove chemicals such as triclosan and triclocarban from their products or take them off the shelves entirely, and an additional year to get rid of ingredients like benzalkonium chloride, which are less commonly used.

“Consumers may think antibacterial washes are more effective at preventing the spread of germs, but we have no scientific evidence that they are any better than plain soap and water,” Janet Woodcock, M.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER), said in a statement. “In fact, some data suggests that antibacterial ingredients may do more harm than good over the long-term.”

As environmental and public health groups have noted, triclosan has been shown to disrupt hormones and muscle function. And although the chemical kills bacteria by breaking open their cell walls, the process takes up to nine hours—so it is ineffective when simply washing hands.

“This decision by the FDA is a huge victory on behalf of human health and the environment,” said Environmental Working Group (EWG) president and co-founder Ken Cook.

The organization, which has offices in California, previously found “widespread” triclosan contamination in the San Francisco Bay.

Mae Wu, a senior attorney in the Health Program at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), said, “Consumers have waited a long time for this sensible safeguard. Banning triclosan in these products is a huge step toward ensuring that the soaps we use every day on our bodies are safer.”...........

Thats great news. Hate the stuff. It stinks for hours. Hopefully this means I won't have to take my own soap to the wash rooms at work anymore. We'll see.

Does it include those no wash products people have in their workspaces? Constantly pumping bottles and wringing their hands. Reminds me of something lecherous.

Everyone with a tactical survival bug out bag or EDC will need to make changes.

Buy it by the gallon. Wife had an incident with MRSA years back. Uses it all the time, me, not so much.

forgot to mention the dish soaps... what an hoax.... I showed this to several people yesterday, and most remained unresponsive or shrugged. So the industry can be at fault for decades and they wont care.

Most people have just lost their intellectual defense mechanisms.

Mark Passio is right when saying that the Principle of Care, or lack thereof, drives the good or evil. Peace and enlightenment depend on it. The more we care to know, the more peaceful society will become. But the matrix has managed to frame everybody in one's own reality bubble.

Payback time is around the corner

There were 19 ingredients. FDA says manufacturers did not provide safety data for 16 ingredients. I don't know if that means 16 were blocked or if it was only the 2 that it mentioned specifically: Triclosan and Triclocarban.

1. Eligible Active Ingredients

There are 19 of the antiseptic active ingredients eligible for the OTC Drug Review for use as a consumer antiseptic wash that are addressed in this final rule. These ingredients are:

Cloflucarban
Fluorosalan
Hexachlorophene
Hexylresorcinol
Iodophors (Iodine-containing ingredients)

○ Iodine complex (ammonium ether sulfate and polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate)
○ Iodine complex (phosphate ester of alkylaryloxy polyethylene glycol)
○ Nonylphenoxypoly (ethyleneoxy) ethanoliodine
○ Poloxamer—iodine complex
○ Povidone-iodine 5 to 10 percent
○ Undecoylium chloride iodine complex

Methylbenzethonium chloride
Phenol (greater than 1.5 percent)
Phenol (less than 1.5 percent)
Secondary amyltricresols
Sodium oxychlorosene Show citation box
Tribromsalan
Triclocarban
Triclosan
Triple dye

The FDA said the manufacturers did not supply any evidence for 16 of the ingredients, but allowed for a 1-year deferment before ruling on benzalkonium chloride, benzethonium chloride, and chloroxylenol (PCMX). Soaps with these ingredients can still be sold at this time.

Hibiclens uses: chlorhexidine gluconate

This does not affect wipes or hand sanitizers.

another in a long list of "common sense" health items (flu shots, etc) that I never use and miraculously never get sick
