It's not a "mascot," per se - it's a meme. An organic icon that arose from the ranks.

Kek originally was something Orc players would say in the MMORPG World of Warcraft when laughing.

They'd literally go Kekekeke, instead of Hahahaha.

This was used on 4chan, when was an edgy way to say LOL by the Alt-Right. This way people on the Alt-Right would say "Kek" instead of "LOL" as sort of an inside gesture so people know they were both Alt-Right.

Over time Kek started getting linked to Pepe. People were starting to worship "Kek", because their "religion" was to do this crap for laughs, or the LULZ. Then the religious and occultic memes kicked in and now it's turned into an ironic joke occultic religion.
